Make Soap as a Fun Craft to do with Your Kids

Soap making can be a fun project to do with your kids. It will get the creative juices flowing AND maybe get them clean too! LOL!!.

Simple Soap Making

What you need for soap making

  • Colorless bars of natural or fragrance free soap
  • Essential oils of your choice to scent soap. Examples; Lavender, rose oil, citrus or mint.
  • Food coloring
  • Vitamin E oil
  • Blender
  • Soap molds or cookie cutters
  • Double Boiler
  • Wax paper

Grate soap in a blender and melt it in a double boiler. Add oils and coloring to suit your preference. You can add toys or other items to soap to make it fun (let the kids have fun with it). Add water until the soap becomes thin enough to pour into a mold. Let molds sit for about 48 hours and then release onto wax paper.

Note: if you use cookie cutter, then you will want to spread the soap out as if you are making sugar cookies! ;)

Making soap with your kids will be a fun and rewarding experience that you will remember for years to come.Once you get into the groove, you can make it on a regular basis. Making homemade soap can also be a frugal way to give a special birthday or holiday gift as well. You can make it s tradition. Your friends will LOVE it and so will your kids friends! Have FUN with it!!!

Happy Soap Making!

Repay No Evil for Evil

Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is honest, and proper and noble, aiming to be above reproach in the sight of everyone. – Romans 12:17

Unfortunately, this is the opposite of what we see in this self centered world. We live in a world where real love and forgiveness does not exist. It’s all about me and I.

Real love is self-LESS.

Let me give a practical example of this Scripture in action:

You are having one of those days with your husband…you know…the kind of day where one wrong word and there could be a fight. We have ALL had them I am sure…

Well, let’s say that you’re the one that triggers the bomb, and your husband explodes. He says something without thinking, and hurts your feelings.

You have two options…you could bite back (NOT recommended!)…or you could really create a shock wave and apologize for whatever triggered the response. EVEN if it really wasn’t “apology worthy.” EEEK! LOL!

The point is to show character and replace the wrong
(no matter who did the wrong) with LOVE.

This is NO EASY task.

Honestly, there are days my flesh would love to get in a ring with my husband for just five minutes. However, I know that the only thing that will produce is more rotten fruit and more fighting.

On the flip side, when I extend UNDESERVED grace, love, and mercy towards him, it almost always cools the fire. Doesn’t God show us this same UNDESERVED grace, love, and mercy EVERY day?

When we let our flesh die, and submit to God’s ways, it WILL ALWAYS turn out better. Even when we do not see an immediate manifestation of our obedience…it IS working!!

So, the next time your husband, friend, or beloved child sends you to the breaking point…Do what will put a smile on your Daddy’s Face…LOVE ‘EM!

Gourmet Jar Candles – Product Review

Product Name: Mia Bella Gourmet Jar Candles
Submitted By: Lara
Rating: 10+
Where to buy: Momma Mia

Description: 16oz. gourmet jar candles. Over 90 different fragrances to choose from! All jar candles use our proprietary natural wax blend.

Review: Mia Bella Gourmet Jar Candles are truly the BEST candles I have ever used. Not only do they smell fabulous from start to finish, but they are virtually soot free. What do I mean? Ya know that black gunk that builds up on the side of most jar candles? Well, I rarely if ever see any soot and when I do it is so minimal that it does not even matter to me!

These candles also burn evenly. I was SHOCKED when I discovered that candle after candle would burn nice and evenly all the way down to the bottom…practically NO waste!

The smell factor. Man, when the UPS man comes with our monthly COTM delivery we smell it through the box immediately…we even guess what the candle’s scent will be before we even open the box! The smell is SO strong…in a good way!

Some of my favorite scents are Sweet Orange Chili Pepper, Key Lime, Pumpkin Cheesecake, and my absolute favorite is Peppermint Truffle. It smells like a York Peppermint Patty…YUM!

Another wonderful thing about Mia Bella’s Gourmet Jar candles is that they are made in the good ole USA! For me, that is a MAJOR plus!

I encourage you to try them for yourself…they also make GREAT gifts! I give them away at Christmas and to girlfriends for birthdays. I am sure you will love them just as much as I do!!

Don’t even get my started on all their other awesome products! I will tell you about them another time…

Computers – Do our kids NEED them?

In today’s modern society, it is important that our kids have experience with computers. However, do they NEED them?? In my opinion, yes and no. LOL. Sorry to not have a clearer answer. Let me explain…

Computers are a great source of information and resources. They can be extremely helpful to homeschool families and for researching. They are a vital tool for school work. Many schools already have computers in their classrooms. So, we certainly want them to know what they are doing!

Computers are not going away. I believe we should begin early with familiarizing our kids with computers. They have educational software that you can use for the little ones and of course the Internet is a vast and endless place of information.

Speaking of Internet…THAT is a very dangerous part of allowing our kids on the computer. We MUST be very careful and NEVER assume they will do the right thing no matter how trustworthy they are. WE need to protect them and keep them safe.

How?

  • set up parental controls
  • keep the computer in a public pace in the home
  • monitor what your kids are doing online
  • set rules and consequences when they are broken
  • talk to them about the dangers and make sure they understand
  • stay involved
  • set time limits
  • lock the computer when you are not home or unable to be that “omni-presence”
  • WATCH them closely!

Moms, the Internet is not the enemy…PARENTS are in many cases. Yes, I said it. If PARENTS are watching closely and monitoring what their kids are doing, there will be MANY less issues regarding the negative sides of the Internet and our youth.

Kids are kids. They NEED parental guidance…even if it makes us UNcool!

Computers ARE important. However, they are not the all in all. I believe technology also has many hindrances. Here are several…

  • Our kids do not read as much.
  • They do not write letters.
  • They do not send letters anymore.
  • More than ever we have youth obesity.
  • Playing outside is not as common.
  • Video games have become far to real and important to them.
  • Fingers get more exercise than growing bodies.
  • Un-monitored kids are preyed upon.
  • The simple things are no longer appealing.

I believe that computers and technology are overstated. I think…no…I KNOW we need to limit them. We need to get back to the basics. We need to MAKE out kids get out and play. We need to MAKE them read and write more. We need to play more board games and do more activities that allow face time.

Computers and technology has robbed us of some very basic…yet VITAL ingredients for healthy communication and family memories!

So, yes, our kids should learn how to use a computer and enjoy the wondrous things they can accomplish with computers and technology. However, let’s keep them in their place. Computers are not the all in all and they should not be more important that the basics in life…relationships, love, and good old fashioned verbal communication!

Homeschool Corner – The Importance of Learning Styles

I recently finished reading Cathy Duffy’s book: “100 Tops Picks for Homeschool Curriculum.” If you have not read this book, I highly suggest it. Your may even be fortunate enough to be able to borrow a copy from your local library. In her books, she does not only detail some amazing homeschool curricula, but she also devotes a major part of the book to discussing and helping you assess your learning style and the learning styles of your children.

Reading this book took my mind back to my time in college when I studies all about the different learning styles, sometimes referred to as multiple intelligences. I also remembered how important it is to know not only the learning styles of your children, but your learning style (and ultimately your teaching style) as well. When you know what methods of learning that you prefer, you will know what types of curricula you are most comfortable with teaching. Also, when you know the preferred learning styles of your children, you will have insight into how they learn best as well.

Howard Gardner spent significant time studying and formulating a list of the seven intelligences during his life. The seven intelligences that he devised are (Smith, 2002):

  • Linguistic intelligence
  • Logical-mathematical intelligence
  • Musical intelligence
  • Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence
  • Spatial intelligence
  • Interpersonal intelligence
  • Intrapersonal intelligence

You can get a very thorough explanation of each of these intelligences if you visit infed.org/thinkers/gardner.htm. However, for a quick reference, here is a brief description of each of the intelligences (Armstrong, 2000):

  • Linguistic intelligence – “word smart”
  • Logical-mathematical intelligence – “number/reasoning smart”
  • Musical intelligence – “music smart”
  • Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence – “body smart” (especially the sense of touch)
  • Spatial intelligence – “picture smart”
  • Interpersonal intelligence – “people smart”
  • Intrapersonal intelligence – “self smart”

So, how does all this apply to homeschooling? Well, there are a plethora of curricula out there and often it is very difficult to choose the best one for your children and family. Each of your children might do best with a different type of curriculum. Since we all want out children to learn to their fullest potential, knowing their personal learning style will greatly assist you in choosing the right curriculum for each of your children.
Why do I need to know MY learning style? This is another important area. You must know your learning style as well because the way you learn will often correlate with the ways that you prefer to teach your children as well. If you know the ways that you prefer to teach, and know the ways that your children prefer to learn, then it is much easier to find curriculum choices that can suit you both, even though sometimes that means trying to find curriculum that is more of a happy medium so that you both can be happy in the learning process.

How can I find out my learning style and the learning styles of my children? I have gathered several free online assessments that can help you to do this. However, most of the ones I found are not geared towards young children being able to complete them themselves. You may have to think about each of your children and complete the form or complete it with you child, asking him or her some questions as you go. If you prefer an assessment geared towards your younger child, I suggest the Teele Inventory, which can be purchased for around $25 from Sue Teel’s Website at: sueteele.com/teele_inventory.html. I used this assessment multiple times during my teaching career and found the results to not only be very interesting, but also provided me with valuable information about each of my students. In completing the inventory, I was able to know which styles each of them preferred and was able to attempt to better meet their personal learning style needs.

So, if you wish to do this for your family, here are some free assessments that you can use:

  • Learning Assessment for Adults: engr.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/ilsweb.html
  • Assessment for All Ages: agelesslearner.com/assess/learningstyle.html (you may have to complete this one with your rather than letting him or her complete it independently)
  • All Ages: learning-styles-online.com/inventory/ – Click on: “free online learning styles inventory” (you may also have to complete this one with your child)
  • Learning Style Assessments for Child Learning Style, Adult Learning Style, and Teaching Style: homeschoolviews.com/quiz/quiz.html
  • Assessment Chart: chaminade.org/inspire/learnstl.htm

In closing, I do hope that you enjoyed this article and would look into finding out the learning styles of all the members of your family. When I did it, I found out that my oldest learns very similarly to me (linguistic and interpersonal), my middle child prefers logical-mathematical learning, and my youngest is a strong bodily-kinesthetic learner. Although I pretty much knew where my younger two would fall, I was very surprised by my oldest child’s results. I had been having problems getting through to her during our lessons and was not sure why. After finding out this information, and seeing just exactly how much alike she and I are in our learning preferences, I was able to adjust my strategies slightly so that she will get more out of her lessons. I hope that you and your family will find the results helpful so that all of you can have a happier and more productive time learning together.

Healthy, Honest and Open Communication with your Teenager

In this day and age it is VERY important to have an open and honest relationship with your children. You should start MUCH earlier than teens. However, having good communication with your teenager is vital to protecting them and properly guiding them.

I believe we should be COMPLETELY honest with them and share OUR own mistakes that we made…and the consequences of them. By being honest with them, they see us as more than “just Moms.” They see that we were where they are at. We remember the pressures and difficulties.

Teenagers go through a LOT. Emotionally. Physically. Mentally. Socially. Spiritually. They NEED to have a place for healthy and honest communication. And, it MUST come from their parents.

I am happy to say that I have a GREAT relationship with my teenage daughter. She tells me everything and I am careful to value her and what she has to say. I have had this with her early on. I MADE it happen. I share with her and allow her to share with me.

Our communication is so healthy that she even understands when I say no. She may not be happy or agree, but she handles it VERY well. She understands I love her and only have her best interest at heart.

Why?

Because we have healthy, honest and open communication.

If your teenager is not communicating with you. Or, maybe you never had good communication with YOUR Mother. Then you need to learn. You need to BEGIN now. It is NEVER too late to have healthy, honest and open communication with you children. Never.

How can you Start having good Communication with your Teenager?

You can start by using the following tips. Remember, communication is a vital ingredient to ANY relationship. If you want to have healthy relationships, you MUST have healthy, honest and open communication.

Moreover, it is our responsibility to TEACH and TRAIN our children to be well balanced adults. Adults that KNOW how to communicate their feelings and understand what healthy communication and relationships are made of. The BEST way to teach our children is to MODEL it before them!

OK, on to some ideas to help you communicate better with your teenager.

Pray. God wants to be a part of EVERY aspect if your life…including parenting. ASK Him to help you. He will.

Tell the Truth. Tell your kids about your boo boos. You are not doing them any favors by acting like you never did anything wrong. They will just feel like failures and will feel like they could NEVER measure up.

Eye Contact. You know this one. Good eye contact is a very important ingredient to proper communication. Look at them when you are talking to them and look at them when they are talking to you.

Be Safe. When they tell you something shocking, don’t pull a “Mom” on them. Yes, you ARE Mom. BUT…they need more than Mom. First, you build trust, then you can pull a gentle Mom. Meaning, you listen, then you share your thoughts on the matter like you would a friend. Keep in mind, you ARE their MOM. However, you must build trust and have a relationship with them beyond their life with you. The teenage years are a great opportunity to build a friendship with your children. You will not have authority over them any longer once they grow up.

Listen. Sometimes you just need to listen. Do not offer any advice. Just listen.

Waiting Period. When they throw a question out there that is difficult to answer and/or need to be discussed with Dad, make a “waiting period” rule. What do I mean? OK, we have a 48 hour waiting period for topics or questions I cannot answer right away. For example, if she wants to go do something with some friends, she cannot ask me and expect to hear a yes. I need to think, check my calendar, see who is going, etc.

Boundaries. You need to set them and they do as well. Boundaries MUST be respected. You should NOT read your child’s diary UNLESS you feel they are in danger. Would you like someone reading your personal thoughts? I do not read my daughters diary. However, I would IF and only IF I thought she was in danger. This is only one example of boundaries.

Value Them. Do not make everything an issue. Take them seriously. Listen to the big stuff and the “man, this video game is frustrating,” “he has a cute butt,” “we didn’t win the football game,” or the “I hate my hair” stuff. Don’t be nutty. LOL. Let them be teenagers. Let them share without having to be constantly corrected. Also, let them SEE you listening even when they are only communicating the fluffy stuff. They KNOW if you are REALLY listening or just half listening. Make them a priority.

Boys need Dad. Understand that communicating with a teenage boy is MUCH different. They can only go so deep with you. There are things that ONLY Dad, as a man can share. They need to hang out. Throw the foot ball. You know, “guy stuff.” So, encourage healthy communication with your teenage son and his father. If you are a single Mom, maybe your brother, a close friend, or pastor would be willing to take the time to build a relationship with your son. PRAY about it. Make sure they are trustworthy. Pray some more and go with your gut.

Daughters. Daughters need to have Mom time. They need to have a beauty day, go for coffee, lunch, paint pottery or whatever you and your daughter can enjoy. My teenage daughter covets and cherishes our time together. We have “Our Night.” Daughters need Daddy too. Daddy needs to take her on dates to teach her how she should be treated. She needs to be able to communicate with him so she will be able to communicate with her husband. Obviously, she will not share her “woman” stuff with him However, she can tell him about that cute guy at school, or how she cannot figure out something. You know.

Put forth effort and get to know your teenager. Start younger if you can. However, KNOW that it is NEVER too late to begin to have healthy, honest and open communication with your teenagers.

Physical Fitness for You AND the Kids

In this techno crazed world we live in most children are content to spend their days flopped on the couch eating a bag of chips and playing video games or brain frying television shows. Children MUST have proper physical fitness that they need. Kids need to be active and moving. It is good for their bone development, health, weight, and it will help them be fit adults.

So, get those kids active, limit the video games and television, and maybe use some ideas from below!

There are many ways to teach your kids about physical fitness, why it’s important, how to get them interested enough to participate, and show them it’s actually fun as well.

When your children are still too young for fitness, they should see YOU being fit. NOT eating cookies on the couch and watching soap operas on the couch. Seriously, God would rather you get some activity and spend time with Him before you plop on the couch with the latest yummy and watch something that is no good for your spirit anyway! ;)

As your children grow, you can utilize a stroller and go for a walk. Then move on to them walking WITH you. I speed walk every day with my toddler in the stroller and my teenager right beside me…or in many cases a step ahead of me keeping me motivated to KEEP UP!

This does not have to be hard. Your children will do and become what they are taught and what they see YOU do. Do you want to raise couch potatoes or active well rounded FIT adults??

Safety First

Well, the first thing we need to do is make sure the kids are using safety practices! Approximately 3 million children suffer injuries when being physically active. To keep your kids from falling into that statistic, use these safety guidelines when exercising.

Running and Sports: Stretching should be done BEFORE we run to get the body ready for any type of physical activity. Also, do not forget to cool down. If sports are being played they should have the proper equipment for the activity.

Bike Riding, Roller Blading and Skate Boarding: MAKE them wear a helmet. Period. Knee and elbow pads could prevent injuries as well. However, a proper fitting helmet is numero uno and should be NON negotiable. Do you want your kids to be “cool” or safe?

Water: Make sure that your kids do not overheat. Give them PLENTY of water. Especially in warmer climates.

Supervision: This is a no brainer. We need to watch our kids. For teenagers, make sure that they are always with at least one other person and that you know where they will be at all times. A cell phone is a great way to make sure you can reach them.

Here are a Few Physical Activities to Get the Kids…and YOU moving:

  • Speed walk. This is MUCH better for your knees and bones than running. Do some stretches. Grab the kids and go for a speed walk around the neighborhood or park. Bring some water. You do not have to walk for an hour. Speed walk for 20 minutes and then cool down with a nice stroll.
  • Jump Rope. This is fun. If you have more than one child, try some double-dutch rope jumping. It will take you back to your school days.
  • Swimming. If you have a pool, go swimming. If you do not, go to a community pool or your local YMCA. The kids will cool off and get much needed resistance exercise.
  • Sports. Make your kids get involved in SOME sort of sport. Even track.
  • Take the long way. Park farther away and walk with the kids. Use the stairs. Walk to the store instead of drive if it is within 2 miles.
  • Sprinklers. Water your grass, AND , get outside with the kids and run through the sprinklers.
  • Family Bike Ride. Find a local bike trail. Most public parks have one, and go for a family bike ride.

Use your imagination to get you AND your kids moving together. Doing it together will help bond you and they will SEE you doing it and that will help them continue to be physically fit into adulthood.

Moms, God gave us these precious children to love, nurture and teach. We not only need to teach them the Word and about God’s love. We also need to teach them to be well rounded adults. We will stand accountable to the Lord one day. Forget the latest episode of Days and get your fanny in action with your precious gifts! Before you know it they will be gone and you will wonder where the time went!
