New In Town – Movie Review

Movie Title: New in Town (in theatres today, 1/30/09)
Rating: PG
Director: Jonas Elmer
Staring: Renée Zellweger & Harry Connick Jr.
Category: Romantic Comedy

Moms of Faith Rating: AWESOME!

Intro: A big city corporate girl (Zellweger) must move to a small town in Minnesota. It turns into quite an adventure of the heart. She learns about love, friendship, loyalty and what she truly wants out of life.

Review: Lucy (Zellweger) must leave her plush life as a corporate woman so that she can prove herself to her corporate big shots.

She volunteers for the daunting task of modernizing and downsizing a small-town Minnesota food plant.

When she arrives, she discovers a freezing cold and slower way of life, with people who are simple, friendly, and actually care about others. However, she is all business and wants to just get the job done and get back to sunny Miami!

Life has other plans for her though…She finds herself caring for these easy going people and begins to love what they love. She even finds a romantic interest in the handsome, firefighter/union rep, Ted ( Harry Connick Jr.).

The humor in “New in Town” was laugh out loud funny. One moment that stands out in my mind was when Lucy first came to town and was driving with her soon to be secretary, Blanche (Siobhan Fallon). While they are chatting, a humorous dialogue ensues…Blanche (in her quirky Minnesota accent) asks Lucy ,“Have you found Jesus?” “Well, I didn’t know He was missing,” Lucy answers with a laugh. Pause, while Blanch ponders that response. “Normally we don’t joke about Jesus around here,” Blanche responds. (there is more to follow that I will leave out.)

I do not like to give too many details away and ruin the film for my readers, however, I will tell you this, the movie has a great story, witty humor, surprisingly positive view of God, and nothing that would make me not recommend it to my friends.

Cons: There were no “major” cons for New in Town, However, there are a few things worth mentioning…

There was some unnecessary potty mouth in the film. I counted about 2 “S” words, 3 “D” words, 4/5 “A” words, 1 hell and 1 “SOB.”

As far as sex, a couple kisses, a make out scene where they did not show anything other than some brief kissing, and then when they got “caught,” you saw that Ted’s belt was undone. So, yes, it eluded to groping. However, we never saw or heard anything.

There was also one scene in the beginning of the film where Lucy takes off her coat and her nipples are hard. However, again, it is not meant to be a dirty scene. It is actually a very funny, laugh out loud moment that EVERY woman on the planet should be able to relate to!

Conclusion: Right down to the sound track, this was one of the best romantic comedies I have seen in quite a while. It was laugh out loud funny, heart warming and relatively clean! I loved this film and highly recommend it! It is a great date night movie, or even a girls night out!

Oh, and ladies, be sure and check out Lucy’s shoes! She wears the coolest shoes, donchaknow!

New in Town opens TODAY! So, go check out the movie times and see New in Town this weekend!

Homeschool Corner: Compassion Lessons – Addressing the Unexpected in Your Homeschooling Day

(Note: I am unable to write my weekly devotional today…I am very sick. So, here is one of our columnists article for homeschooling. :) God Bless – Lara)

Have you ever had one of those days that you felt as if you were falling a little behind in your studies and were pressed to get caught up? Have you ever had one of those “pressing” days when something happened that caused you to put on the brakes and stop everything you were so pressed to get finished? If you have, then you know what I am talking about. If you have never experienced one of those days, you will know in your heart what you need to do.

We have had more than one of these days happen in our homeschooling years. Sometimes something happens in your own family, but sometimes the event may affect a neighbor or someone else that had no one else to turn to but you. It could be an emergency trip to the doctor or hospital, it could be a death in the family of someone you know, it could be helping someone with cleaning because they simply can’t do it, or it could simply be spending a day praying with those that need it.

Your child’s academic studies are important, but it is also important that your child learn how to care for others in this world. We would never want our children to be only great scholars, with no ability to care for others. Without the ability to show compassion to others when it is needed, your children will have a difficult time as an adult. However, the opportunity to teach your children about compassion does not often arise. So, when you are given a chance, take it. Set the school books aside and help those that are in need.

There are some things in life that children cannot learn in any other way until something bad happens. Compassion is one of those. Although we do not want bad times to arise, we can find the good in them by helping out where we able. This will help show your children the compassion lesson that the Lord has placed in your path.

Whatever the event may be, set the schoolwork aside. It will wait. But, the lesson your children will learn from you as they watch you show compassion to those who need it will be longer lasting in their memories than the academic lesson you had in mind for them when you started your day.

Tuesday’s Mommy Tip – Toddler Cleaning Tip

Do you have a great tip for Moms? They can be about anything (family friendly, of course) that pertains to a Mom’s life, including; beauty, kitchen, health, parenting, and so much more! Click Here to find out how YOU can join Moms of Faith’s Tuesday’s Mommy Tips!

NOTE: PLEASE read the rules. We have a few who are not posting to the ACTUAL TIP post on their blog. I need you to post your link to the actual TIP POST…NOT the main page of your site. THANK YOU!!

OK, on to this week’s Mommy tip

Toddler Cleaning Tip

If we can get our little ones to learn to clean up after themselves while they are young, we will save them the frustration of being a messy adult! One thing we implement in our house is the “one thing at a time” rule. If our little one wants to play barbies, well, then she can pull out her barbie stuff. However, if she gets bored and wants to play dress up, she needs to put all of her barbie stuff away FIRST. Then she can pull out the dress up clothes and such. It is simple…yet effective in helping a toddler learn to clean up after themselves. AND, it keeps the chaos under control! We also make sure her room is clean every night before she goes to bed! Teenagers…well…that’s another story…

3 large potatoes, diced
1 cup fresh or canned corn kernels
handful of fresh parsley, chopped

Heat them slowly in a pan until they open. Discard any that don’t open. Save juice, after straining to remove any sand. Chop half of the clams coarsely, and leave the other half whole.

Put pork, onions, clam juice and 1 quart boiling water into a big pot. Add leeks, celery, carrots, corn, parsley, thyme, bay leaves, salt, pepper, and a dash of nutmeg. Bring to vigorous boil.

Reduce to a simmer, and add 1 cup scalded whipping cream and the potatoes. Make a roux by browning 2 tbsp flour in the same amount of butter; make it creamy and smooth by adding broth from the chowder pot. Put all the clams into the pot. Simmer slowly, stirring often, until potatoes are just tender. Stir in the roux. Add Worcestershire sauce and a dash of Tabasco. Serve sizzling hot!

Walking in the Spirit – The Holy Spirit’s Roles

<–back to Walking in the Spirit Main

The Holy Spirit has several roles that He plays in our lives. Some of them require action by us and others are done regardless of our actions. It is important that we know them, so that we can better understand the Spirit and His ways.

The Holy Spirit’s Roles…

convict - the Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin. (John 16:7-11)

baptize - we are not only to be baptized with water, but with fire. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a very powerful thing and NO believe should lack in this area. In many ways, failure to receive this power is what causes much grief in a believer’s life. ONLY the Holy Spirit leads us to a renewal and a deeper level with the Lord and an understanding that can give us. (1Corinthians 12:13, 30)

rebirth - we are “born again” through the power of the Holy Spirit. We are no creatures in Christ. The old has passed away and the new has come. We no longer have to be ruled by sin. We now have the power to overcome sin through the power of the Holy Spirit. (John 3:1-8)

fill - another job of the Holy Spirit is to FILL us with His presence. However, the only way this can happen is IF a believer ALLOWS Him to and yields to the Lord’s Will. Allowing the Spirit to control us is allowing GOD’s WILL to be our will. It means letting go of ourselves and letting God mold us into His image. This is something that is all based on our own will. The Holy Spirit cannot lead us UNLESS we allow Him to! (Ephesians 5:18)

restrain - the Holy Spirit’s presence in this world restrains evil. We think it’s bad now…we have no clue! It would be a world filled with ONLY hate, lust, sin and an overwhelming wickedness the likes of which we have never seen. There would be NO good thing. There would be every evil thing you can imagine. There would be no hope. No mercy. Only Pain. Without the presence of the Holy Spirit this world would be run by evil and NO good thing would be here. Period. (2Thessalonians 2:6-12)

indwell - he is IN us. The Holy Spirit indwells in us when we receive Him. He makes the Word fully known to us. Even David knew Him and did not want to be separated from Him! (Colossians 1:25-27, Psalm 51:10-12)

seal - we are marked for lack of a better word…sealed as owned by the Living God. We are joint heirs with Jesus Christ. This is a HUGE thing. We are God’s. NOTHING else can have us. ONLY the Holy Spirit can dwell IN us. No demon can harm us or possess us. (Ephesians 4:30)

God wants us to recognize the Third Person of the Trinity. God wants us to understand the Holy Spirit’s role in our lives. He wants us to yield to the power of the Holy Spirit and allow Him to lead us to a victorious and peace-filled life. He wants us to be FILLED with His presence.

Next time we will talk about being led by the Spirit and what that looks like.

Let’s Pray;

Daddy God, thank You for Your Holy Spirit. Thank You that You did not leave us in a world without goodness and hope. Thank You for the Power that Your Holy Spirit makes available to me. Help me to learn how to walk in the Truth if Your Word. Help me to allow the Holy Spirit to lead me down the narrow path that YOU have laid before me. Help me to recognize His presence and yield to YOUR Will. Thank You for loving me and ONLY wanting the best for me! In Jesus Mighty Name, Amen!

Your Homework

Memorize: It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us, and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us.2 Corinthians 1:21-22 (NLT)

Getting Kids to Eat Healthy

If we train our children while they are still little, they will be healthier eaters than they would be if we left them to their own devices! So, HOW do you get a toddler or young child to eat veggies? Make it fun! The carrots and cucumbers can be called wheels. The tomatoes cut in to wedges can be combined with other veggies to make happy faces. Kids LOVE to play with their food and they LOVE to use their imaginations. If we, as Mothers, help them, they will love to eat more. There are SO many ways to be creative with healthy foods. USE YOUR imagination and you will soon find that eating healthy can be fuun for Moms too!

Name Brand Review: Levis 512 Perfectly Slimming Jeans

Product Name: Levis 512 Perfectly Slimming Jeans
Submitted by: Christine – (MOF Forum Member)
Rating: 9
Where to buy: I bought at Sears Essentials, but available at most retailers that sell Levis.
***See them online at: denimexpress.com/levi-misses-512-jeans.html

Description: Bootcut jeans with hidden tummy control panel

Review: Since having children my bod has been FAR from perfect, especially in the tummy area. These jeans fit great with just enough stretch. They really do help flatten my stomach and are very flattering. I was actually able to go down one size compared to regular Levis. The waistline sits at the “natural” waist, which means they’re not low rise (yea!) I bought a pair in the Rinse Indigo and one in the Stretch Dark Indigo. They are so comfortable they’re the only ones I want to wear. They are also available in a light denim blue.

Criticism: I absolutely love these jeans and would have given them a 10 except for two things. First, they don’t come in black and second, the average length is a bit too long for me. At 5′ 5″ I’m too tall for the short but too short for the average. A higher heel (not!) or a simple hem job takes care of that problem.

*** I can’t vouch for the online retailer Denim Express since I’ve never used them. I included the site for reference purposes only, so please use your own discretion.

Homeschool Corner: Learning through Arts and Crafts

I learned to love arts and crafts at an early age. It is something that I always wanted to pass down to my children. When they were in public school, they really did not have any exposure to arts and crafts except for the occasional coloring page or Christmas project. However, those types of activities were not deemed as educational by the powers that be, so time that was spent on them was very limited.

When we first began homeschooling, I wanted to make sure that we spent some time with arts and crafts, in addition to our studies, because I feel there are significant learning opportunities in crafting. First, some children are not naturally able to hold scissors or cut with them. My son was an example of this. Since crafting was not done in his classroom at school, he had no clue how to hold scissors, let alone do anything productive with them. For whatever reason, his fine motor skills were behind that of other children his age. Just the little act of learning to cut with scissors was a huge accomplishment. After that was done, then we could move onto other fine motor practice, like holding a paintbrush and eventually… a needle for plastic canvas projects.

In addition to those fine motor skills, there are other things to be learned through crafting. Creativity is an obvious one and it can definitely be learned as the children delve into projects. Give them opportunities to not only complete projects that are similar to yours, but let them come up with ideas of their own and give them a try. You will be amazed with what they can create. Through the successful completion of projects, children can also learn self confidence as their self esteem is boosted by completing projects that they and others enjoy.

The great thing about crafting with your children is that they can also strengthen their reading and mathematical abilities while completing projects. If, for example, they saw a pattern for pom-pom snowmen and they really wanted to complete that project, they would have to use math and reading skills. They would need to read the materials list and follow the directions. This is not just reading the words (sometimes referred to as “word calling”) but requires comprehension of what they are reading as well. To complete their project, they need to gather materials also. They will need to have the right number of pom-poms and googly eyes and decorations that the pattern called for. They will have to count to make sure they have enough. If they want to complete more than one snowman, they would also have a chance to practice multiplication.

Although learning in these ways may not always be practical for a school classroom, they can be practical in your home school. I encourage you to take some time to craft with your children. In addition to what can be learned, you will also have an opportunity to develop some quality memories together as you share time making your creations. Have fun creating and enjoy your time together!

Walking in the Spirit (Devotional Series – Intro)

<–back to Walking in the Spirit Main

We are beginning a new devotional series today using what the Lord has been teaching me. I believe that if we, as Christian Mothers, would live our lives for Jesus and WALK in the Spirit, we would have happier, more peaceful and victorious lives. We would also be training up our children to live the same!

Walking in the Spirit

Trinity

Note: I am not here to argue the Trinity. It is a fact. If you have an issue with this fact, take it up with God.

How can the Trinity help us walk in the Spirit?

Well, God is the Trinity. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are a package deal. They each have a function and purpose and are ONE God.

This lesson is not meant to explain HOW that is. However, just to help those who may have a hard time wrapping their minds around three being one, let me give you a few practical examples…

  • the platypus. this creature has the tail of a beaver, feet and bill like a duck, and venom like a snake. However, it is still a platypus. It needs ALL of it’s parts to BE a platypus.
  • water. it can take the forum of ice, liquid or vapor. In the end, it is still water.
  • woman. a woman can be a Grandmother, Mother and Daughter, all at the same time. Each with a different role, but the same person.
  • sandwich. You have ham, cheese and bread. When you put them all together, you have one sandwich. Each part different. However, together, they make ONE sandwich. You must put it all together for it to BE a sandwich.

We can go on and on with examples explaining the Trinity. Honestly, it requires faith and study. None of these examples REALLY explain every part of what the Trinity means. The point is, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are each unique in their purpose and function. However, one cannot be without the other. They are all ONE God as a three part unit.

OK, back to our lesson…

How can the Trinity help us walk in the Spirit?

To answer this, we must dig into the gold mine of the Word of the Living God.

The Father. He is our Abba (Daddy). He is the Will part of the Trinity. He is the Head. I guess the best way to describe the Father’s role would be, Director. We know that Jesus did the Will of the Father and nothing for Himself.

For I have come down from heaven not to do My own will and purpose but to do the will and purpose of Him Who sent Me. – John 6:38

So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will understand that I Am he. I do nothing on my own but say only what the Father taught me. – John 8:28

The Father has all the plans. He is the one with the vision. He already has our life planned out, if we would just walk into it.

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. -  Jeremiah 29:11

The Son. Jesus is the Word. The Word made flesh. He was there at the very beginning with the Father and Holy Spirit. He is the WORD.

IN THE beginning was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.

He was present originally with God.

All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being. – John 1:1-3

The Holy Spirit. He is the energy. He is what gives us the strength to DO the Father’s Will that we learn from the Word (Jesus).

IN THE beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

The earth was without form and an empty waste, and darkness was upon the face of the very great deep. The Spirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters. – Genesis 1:1-2

Hovering or moving means to flutter, move, shake. He was the One that put the energy in Creation. He breathed life into it. Another example of How the Holy Spirit is the energizer is in Psalm 104:30. There are MANY more as well. You should do a study into this for yourself. I have also provided several Scriptures in your homework.

[Not in your own strength] for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight. – Philippians 2:13

AWESOME!

I use the Amplified and KJV for most of my studies. However, for this Scripture, I also like the New Living Translation…

For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. - Philippians 2:13

OK, to in closing…

The Trinity DOES help us walk in the Spirit!

The Father has a plan and purpose for our lives that requires us to do His WILL.

He tells us His Will and purpose for our lives in His WORD. We learn it by consistantly studying and reading the Word.

We are then given the ability to DO His Will that we learn through His Word by the POWER of the Holy Spirit.

I love You, Lord and I want not only to live a life that shines for you, I also want to live a powerful, victorious and SPIRIT filled life. Teach me how to Walk in the Spirit and apply what I have learned. Help me to learn Your Will through Your Word and give me the Power of take authority over all of my circumstances. Thank You Daddy. Thank You Jesus. Than You Holy Spirit. Thank You MIGHTY God! IN Jesus Name, Amen!

Bug Bite Helper

What kid can avoid a bug bite? What adult for that matter. As a Mom, it can be sad to see your child suffering from the itchies. To help reduce itching there are a few easy methods I know that are quick, easy and most likely in your kitchen! The baking soda method requires 2 parts baking soda to 1 part water. The goal is a paste. Slather on bug bite and immediate relief ensues. Then there is the ice method. Take an ice cube and rub it all over the bite until the itching subsides. Finally, there is the meat tenderizer method. This method is for bites that sting. You simply rub the meat tenderizer on the stinging bite…you can also try making a paste like the baking soda to keep it in place if you prefer. Note: the meat tenderizer method is also good for jelly fish stings!
