A Stubborn Wife Creates an Angry Husband

I wrote this awhile back for Wives of Faith. I thought it was something to revisit! Every Christian wife can use a reminder every now and then to get back into the proper role that the Lord designed us to be in!

A Stubborn Wife Creates an Angry Husband

By: Lara Velez

I am married to a man whom I sometimes refer to as “My Diva Man.” He is a person who likes things a certain way. He can be quite demanding at times. However, he is also a wonderful husband who works very hard so that I can be home with our two beautiful daughters every day.

Unfortunately, this stubborn wife sometimes forgets that and stomps her foot and refuses to give in to him and what he needs.

Let me share an example that happened recently…

We just started doing the South Beach Diet together. So, I need to make his lunch more often than I used to…now it’s every day.

The other day, I could not find a container large enough to hold what I made AND small enough to fit in his lunch box without having to be at an angle. Well, I didn’t think twice, I just put it on an angle.

The next day I did the same thing. This time, however, he looked in his lunch box and got annoyed. He told me that the dressing from the salad got all over the container lid last time. He asked me what he was supposed to do. I told him to scrape it off. BOOM! He got angry. He said I did not care about him and that he had to go work all night and so on. I got annoyed and basically told him he was a jerk. He went to work.

The next morning I got up to make him breakfast and some food for his second job. I made a tuna salad. What I did not do was drain the tuna as well as he would have liked it and again he noticed BEFORE he even left. He was angry and annoyed and again said that I did not care about him and that I just threw his lunch together with no thought.

I got VERY angry and told him he was self centered and unthankful for the fact that I woke up and was nice enough to make him something.

We went back and forth for a few and he left for work.

Now, of course, my Dear and Wonderful Daddy in Heaven convicted me that day while my husband was working. He made me realize that I was the one who was wrong. I needed to be a help to my husband NOT a stubborn wife. I needed to love and CARE about what I was doing for him, not just throw something together and have a “It’s better than nothing” attitude.

So, I apologized to my husband when he got home from work. And, he apologized for not expressing himself nicer.

My STUBBORNNESS and “whatever” attitude was a hindrance to my husband. It made him angry and upset. Thankfully I got past myself fairly quickly.

Unfortunately, many times, us wives remain stubborn for a LONG time and it causes our men to stumble .

The Word tells us VERY clearly to adapt ourselves to our husbands. Not always an easy task for this fallen woman! LOL!

Helpful and Cooperative Wife = Happy and Fulfilled Husband

Take ONE of your children grocery shopping with you. If they are old enough, let them get the stuff on the bottom shelves and praise them for their help. Make them feel like you shop SO much better when they are around.

If your child is too small, take them anyway, and talk to them. Show then the different fruits and colors. Be creative with the time you have!

A Bedroom of One’s Own

Do you happily go to your bedroom to unwind after a long day? Is it welcoming or uninviting and cold? Your bedroom should be like a sanctuary. A place that you look forward to going at the end of the day or the middle of the day when you need a quick escape. This is one of the most important rooms in your house, it is where you decompress and relax. Every Mom should have a room of her own, or a corner, or any space that is comforting to her. Your surroundings affect how you feel internally. If your bedroom is cluttered than most likely you will not sleep well, and that leads to fatigue, crankiness and an unclear mind.

It is important that as Christians we spend alone time with God no matter how demanding our day. The scriptures clearly indicate that Jesus went on his own several times to be alone with his God. When we take time to pray and talk with God in solitude, our day seems more peaceful and we are more focused. Creating a space in your bedroom to accommodate your needs is simple with these few tips.

Clearing out the clutter is the first step in improving your surroundings. Clutter is all of that hidden junk under the bed and in the closet. Take a day and section the room off, this will make it easier to de-clutter.

When you are cleaning bedroom try following these simple steps:

  • Clean under the bed, behind any furniture, wipe down baseboards and window sills.
  • Wash all bed linens and air out the mattress.
  • Go through your magazines, discard any old issues. If you absolutely cannot part with them, take time tear out the articles you want to keep and place them in a storage box or even a photo album.
  • Sort through your drawers and closets. Each drawer should contain specific clothing. For example, t-shirts in one drawer, socks and underwear in another drawer, etc. Get rid of clothes you no longer wear and give them to charity.
  • Make your closet functional. Purchase sturdy hangers to hang your clothes. Categorize your clothes, for example, hang all pants together, dress shirts next, and then suits, etc.
  • Purchase an inexpensive hanging storage unit for your shoes. Don’t leave them scattered at the bottom of the closet.

Not only will your closet look great, but you will save precious time in the morning.

Next, create your own little piece of heaven. Everyone’s style is unique, so incorporate your favorite colors in your room. Choose comfortable bedding, lots of fluffy pillows, and add warm scented candles. You may even try painting an accent wall, it brings in a whole new dimension to the room. Surround yourself with objects that make you happy. Pictures of family and friends are great to hang, along with framed artwork. If you are book lover like myself, place a book case along the wall. Bring in fresh flowers they will brighten the room and your mood.

Now create your own sacred space that you can go to spend time with our Lord. This can be a corner or any space available in your bedroom that is comfortable or anywhere in the house. I have chosen a small area near a window, because of the wonderful light that streams in. All you need is a comfortable chair, a small table, and your favorite things. I suggest having everything you use when spending alone time with God. I have a bible, a notebook to take notes, a prayer journal, and spiritual books. Have a comfortable blanket nearby and a good reading lamp.

My only rule is Take the TV out of the bedroom. Television belongs in the family or living room not the bedroom. The bedroom is a place to escape the noise. When you spend time alone with God make sure your family knows this is your time, no interruptions, all within reason of course. One other last note is to set boundaries. Your bedroom is your space, make this clear to your children. This means no toys. By all means always make your bed open for group cuddles, but remember you also deserve time to yourself.

It won’t be long before you are sleeping like a baby, but most important is that you find time to spend with our Heavenly Father. Too often we get caught up in our hectic day to acknowledge the one who makes everything possible, who gives us another day. So put the kids down for a nap, turn off the television, and go to your little sacred place. Pour yourself a cup of tea, open your Bible and do the thing that matters the most.

A Few Fun Craft Ideas for Mom’s Special Day

Mother’s Day is just  around the corner and many kids want to show their moms just how special they are. Store-bought gifts and cards are nice, but they lack that personal touch. Something made just for Mom has much more sentimental value, and kids don’t have to spend much money (if any) on it.

Even toddlers can make Mother’s Day crafts with a little help.

Crafts for Mother’s Day

Framed Photos

Every mother loves to look at pictures of her kids. So why not pick out a favorite picture or yourself with Mom and create a beautiful frame for it? There are many ways you can go about making photo frames.

One of the cheapest and simplest ways to make a picture frame is to cut one out of paper. Construction paper, card stock and thick scrapbooking paper are good choices. Or, if you want to make the frame even sturdier, use corrugated cardboard. Just make sure the opening in the middle is large enough to show the part of the photo you want to display, and make the frame any shape you like. Decorate with paint, glitter and stickers. Add a magnet to the back for easy display on the refrigerator.

You can also make frames out of craft sticks. Just glue the ends of four sticks together to make a square, and decorate with markers or paint. Or if you prefer, buy a plain photo frame and decorate it as you please.

Candle Holders

It’s easy to make a lovely candle holder out of a small jar. Larger baby food jars work well for tealights and votives. Pint jars can hold votives or small pillar candles.

To decorate, use tissue paper. Mix equal parts white glue and water, and stick the paper onto the outside of the jar, stopping below the rim. Use pieces of different colors to create a stained glass look. Cut some shapes out of the paper if you like, arrange them in a pretty pattern, and glue on top of the larger pieces. Coat with the glue mixture to seal, and let dry.

Bath Salts

Want to help Mom pamper herself on her special day? Make her some homemade bath salts. They will help her relax and leave her skin feeling great.

Just mix 3 cups of Epsom salts, 2 cups of baking soda, and 1 cup of table salt. Add about twenty drops of a fragrant essential oil. Lavender, sandalwood and chamomile are good choices. Mix thoroughly. Present the bath salts to Mom in a pretty jar tied with a ribbon.

Decorative Flowerpot

Moms adore flowers. Creating a unique flowerpot with a plant you’ve grown for her is sure to bring a smile to her face.

Small clay flowerpots are easy to paint on. Use acrylic paint to make a pretty scene or design. You can decorate it with markers, glitter glue and stickers. When your creation is dry, fill it with potting soil and plant a few seeds. Try to do this a week or two before Mother’s Day so the plant will have time to start growing. Don’t forget to give it plenty of sun and water.

Mom is sure to appreciate these simple yet thoughtful crafts. They will give her fond Mother’s Day memories for years to come!

WAHM Fridays – How To Create a Business Plan

Last week we talked about WHY we should have a business pan, this WAHM Friday we will teach you HOW to make one!

Many WAHM business owners get overwhelmed when it comes to the necessity of writing their business plan.  It doesn’t have to be as hard as it may seem.

Unless you are looking for major financial funding from a bank or other loan institutions, a simple business plan that includes answers to the following questions will be perfect for your small business purposes.

How to Create a Simple Yet Professional Business Plan

1.  Where am I now with my business?

2.  Where do I want to be with my business?  If you see your deadlines in front of you as you work your business, you’ll be more likely to meet them.  Break this answer down into a timeline to make it easier, using 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, or whatever times work for your particular business.

If you are looking for a way to get a bit more detailed with your plan or you foresee needing it to request funding later, you may want to devote more time and attention.  You can still easily do this by devoting no more than one page to each section of your business plan.

Page 1 – Overview

Include your vision (possibilities) for the company, the purpose (why you started your business) of creating the company and the mission (plans for achieving) of the company.

Page 2 – Business Information

Here is where you would include information about yourself including name, business name and entity, address and phone number.

You’ll also want to summarize your business objectives on this page.  List your goals and how you plan to reach them.  Including what you’ll do to create a profit and what tools and resources you plan to use to do so.

Page 3 – Market & Customers

Answer the following questions in this section of your plan.

- Target market – Who are they? Where are they? How many?  What do you need to know about them?  Why do they need your service?  Is the market growing?  Give specifics about growth and spending habits.  Do as much research on your market as you can and put it in this section, including any barriers or hard to overcome issues.

Page 4 – Competition

Who are your competitors?  What makes you different and the same as those competitors?  How are you competing with them? With price, quality, etc?  How will your market feel about you compared to your competitors.

Page 5 – Marketing

This is a bit like your competition section because you’ll want to discuss how you will market your business products or services.  What makes your business unique?

No matter which method you use to create your business plan, be sure you are answering each of the questions to make it efficient for it’s purpose.  Whether it’s for you or someone else, the ultimate goal of a business plan is to keep you on track and focused and working toward growth.  As your business grows don’t forget to update your plan to grow with it as well.

Yes, You CAN!

Think you can’t forgive that one person who hurt you really bad?

THINK AGAIN!

Tonight was a HUGE step for me….Let me give a brief history…

Last year there was a dispute between a leader in children’s ministry (at my church) and myself. I was going to bat for an injustice against my daughter and lost the fight. I prayed and prayed and prayed…no grace was given from the lady in charge. She seemed to be a very cold hearted person…

I still feel that she was wrong and unkind…no, I KNOW she was. HOWEVER, God allowed my daughter…and our whole family to go through this VERY hurtful situation for a greater purpose. And it has taken almost a year for me to finally understand what that purpose was.

Forgiveness…We all get it freely from the Father…but do we freely give it?

Fast forward to tonight…

I was invited to come to a couples group from church and that lady would be there. I haven’t seen her since our awful confrontation almost a year ago.

Anyway, it was VERY difficult to go…but I did…AND…there was a miraculous light bulb moment! During the praise and worship God completely cleansed me and I forgave her in my heart. I even had nice feelings towards her!

You must understand….this woman DEEPLY hurt my daughter…my husband…and myself. It was a VERY difficult thing to come to terms with. I was very angry…you know the Mother hen type of anger?

I asked God to scold her. Silence. I asked God to help me. Silence. I begged God to help me forgive her. Silence. I did not give up though. And when the opportunity came to be in a room with her again…I didn’t run and hide like I wanted to. I stood tall…asked for Daddy’s help…and GOT THE VICTORY!!!

Are you struggling with forgiving someone? Have you asked and asked and asked? Your answer may be right under your nose…your answer may be this…

How willing are you to forgive? How willing are you to make the first move? How willing are you to be vulnerable? If you are willing, like I was…your victory is right before you…just reach out and GRAB IT!!

I encourage you to pray right now for whatever God is touching you about in the area of forgiveness…and/or…doubt that you CAN do His Will!

God Bless YOU!!

Here is further study on Forgiveness…

In His Love and Service,

Lara ;)

Unhealthy Affects of Stress on the Immune System

Have you ever noticed that you tend to get sick more often when you’re stressed out? Scientists have noticed this unhealthy connection for a long time, but until recently they couldn’t explain it. While a big project at work or the loss of a loved one isn’t going to give you the flu, it can decrease the functioning of your immune system and make you more susceptible to the flu and other infections.

It may surprise you, but short term stress actually boosts the immune system. Increased immune functioning is associated with the “fight or flight” response related to short term stress you know will end. This is because our body is still trying to adapt to beat the stressor instead of just letting the stress bear down. The problem with this is that a majority of our stress is continual over a long period of time.

Long term stress is what actually decreases our immune functioning. The worst kind of stress is not only long term, but stress we think we can’t control or see an end to. For example, while dealing with a rambunctious toddler may cause a decrease in our immune functioning; it’s probably not as bad as stress caused by a debilitating accident. When we think the stress is beyond our control and may never stop, our body feels it can’t cope with the stress and it begins to take its toll. This kind of stress causes a drop in almost all immune functioning.

For regular, long term stressors, the decrease in immune functioning becomes greater with time. This means even if you feel you are in a position of control, long term stress such as a high power job, can build up and gradually decrease your disease fighting abilities.

Another important factor to consider when looking at the immune system and stress is that the decrease in immune system functioning is greater for people who are elderly or already sick. This is likely why older people who are severely injured or have recently lost a loved one are much more likely to die within a year than those who haven’t had these circumstances.

You may think, “Well, I’ll drop my stress level and I’ll be fine”. However, studies have show that traumatic events can stick with us and affect our immune system long after the stressor is gone. If a person was in an accident, was attacked, or experienced a traumatic loss, they can show decreased immunities years later. The best way to increase immunities in this case is to undergo treatment for the trauma.

In addition to causing a decrease in immune system functioning, stress can also make you more susceptible to other long term diseases, such as cardiovascular disease. If you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle you should include activities and a proper diet that promote a less stressful lifestyle.

Tips for Promoting Newsletters

Promoting your newsletter can seem like a daunting task. However, you can be successful if you are willing to do the work. Here are some things that I have learned along the way. I am sure that they will help get you started in the right direction…

MAKE IT AVAILABLE TO YOUR VISITORS: Place a newsletter sign up form on the top of EVERY page of your site and/or forums. By doing this, you are making your newsletter available to every visitor of your site. It is also good for those visitors that may want to sign up, but are busy reading content, and missed the form on another page.

MESSAGE BOARDS: Use your signature to promote the newsletter! Message board sigs are a fantastic promotional tool. It’s like free advertising. Every time you post, there are countless opportunities for your sig line to be read.

BLOGS: Place a link on your blog to the newsletter sign up page. There are many potential subscribers out there that love to Blog. They exclusively search blogs for information. Make the most of your Blog, and use it to promote your business, products, and NEWSLETTER!

Another Blog option is to visit other blogs and post comments with a link to your newsletter sign up page. Most blog comment systems offer a link option. However, make sure you are posting a relevant comment or you may get it deleted. NEVER spam!

ONE of a KIND: There are thousands of newsletters out there in your niche. Make yours different. If you are a carbon copy of everyone else, why would people want to read yours? Be unique…originality goes a long way!

WORD of MOUTH: Once you have mastered the art of originality, your subscribers will tell their friends what a great newsletter you have. You can also have top monthly referral prizes, and newsletter promotional contests to get that word of mouth going.

FUN FACTOR: Have contests for subscribers. People love to win stuff. Be creative and keep your newsletter fun, informative, and easy to read. Ask your advertisers if they would sponsor a contest. You both win. They get free advertising and you get a great prize for your contest. This is another way to generate those “word of mouth” subscribers.

SWAP LINKS: Trade links with other relevant newsletters. Try to find newsletters that have the same type of readers, but are different enough topic wise for them to want to read both. Plus, it’s a great way for WAHM’s to support one another!

DIRECTORIES: There are MANY directories out there, including newsletter and ezine directories. Do a search. Ask around. The point is, get your newsletter listed in as many as you can.

I’m sure that you will see a steady increase in your newsletter subscribers if you put these tips into practice!

Tips for a More Restful Sleep

Have you ever had one of those nights where you mind was going a mile a minute and you just could not get to sleep? Or, have you ever have nights where you keep waking up? If you haven’t been able to get a good night’s sleep, here are some tips you can use to get a more restful sleep.

Watch what you eat:

  • Do not eat right before bed. When you do this you are making your body work all night to digest the food instead of sleep. The best thing is to not eat for at least 2 hours before you go to sleep.
  • Steer clear of caffeine and other stimulants. You may think you’re okay if you don’t drink that diet soda before going to sleep, but stimulants like caffeine, can stay in our bodies for up to 6 hours. If you’re having trouble sleeping. Try limiting caffeine to the beginning of your day.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. Alcohol may put you to sleep quickly, however, you are much more likely to wake up in the middle of the night then to have a restful sleep.

Good Sleeping and Preparation Habits:

  • Go to sleep at the same time each night. Our bodies thrive on consistency. Waking up and going to sleep at a set time each day will help your body develop a normal sleeping pattern.
  • Light and dark. Another way to help set your body on the right path is to make your bedroom as dark as possible while you’re sleeping. On the flip side, when you wake up in the morning, get as much light as possible. Open the shades and let the sun shine in!
  • Form a habit. If you follow a consistent pattern before you go to sleep each night, your body will know it’s time for sleep when you do these things. This will help you fall asleep much faster and with ease.
  • Limit your bedroom to sleeping only. If you sleep in the same place where you work, watch television, or read, you will have a much harder time falling asleep. If you limit your room to only sleep, your mind won’t be occupied by other things.

Destress so your Mind can Rest:

  • Take a warm bubble bath. Light some candles, and set a nice relaxing mood for your bath. This will help soothe your tired muscles, and help you to relax. Just be sure your bath isn’t too hot; it can actually make you more awake.
  • Avoid stimulating activities. This includes not reading or watching T.V. before bed. Instead of relaxing and sleeping, you’ll end up thinking about what you saw or read.
  • Have a nice hot cup of chamomile tea to help you sleep.

If nothing helps you get a more restful sleep, you may need to visit your doctor.

6 Quick Time Saving Tips for Busy Moms

Time is a precious commodity and those who learn to use theirs wisely will always be ahead of the game. First the bad news, the one thing you can’t do is add more hours to your day. No matter what, it’s just not going to happen. The good news, you can do certain things to make every precious minute count and in turn leave you with more free time.

Time Saving Tips for Busy Moms

Buy in Bulk – If you have the space plan ahead and buy things in bulk. You’ll save money and precious time by not having to go to the supermarket so often.

Don’t Let The Housework Pile Up – There’s nothing worst than spending your weekends cleaning. If you do a little bit each day you won’t ever need to spend a whole day cleaning. For example, do a load of laundry daily rather than letting it all pile up for Saturday, same thing with the vacuuming and other tasks. Once the weekend comes around the house should be fairly organized. You may just have to give the bathroom and kitchen a good clean, leaving you with plenty of time to enjoy your family.

Meal Plan – Plan meals for the upcoming week and write your shopping list according to the meals. Make sure you stick the meal plan on the fridge so you can know what foods need to be thawed daily, etc. This will save you a lot of time and money.

Organize Your Life – Spend a little time organizing your house, the time spent doing this will save you a lot of time and hassle in return. Have a set place for everything. For example, have a place near the front door where you can hang your keys and purse. Don’t forget items like umbrellas, hats, gloves and scarves for those rainy or cold days. Set up storage for the kids toys or all magazines and books.

Pay Your Bills Electronically – If you can do this then you should. You will save a lot of time by not having to write out and mail checks. If you really can’t or choose not to do this, then set up a work station and keep your checkbook, stamp, envelopes, pens close at hand. You can also have a calendar with all your important dates and appointments written on there. Go a step further and have an inbox for mail and papers that need to be files. You’ll never waste time looking for these things again.

Plan ahead – Don’t go anywhere without a list. Especially if you have the kids with you, you’re more likely to forget something without a list. So, don’t go on your errand run or shopping trip without a list. Also try to go shopping in the evenings when there are less people in the store. Why waste an hour fighting the crowds when you can be done in 30 minutes. Better yet, do your shopping online.
