Faith – What is it?

<– Back to Faith Devotional Series Main

Today we will begin a series on FAITH. I asked God to help me, and this is what He gave me. So, I am sure it is a subject that He wants us to learn more about.

Hebrews 11 has a lot to say about faith. We will use it as our core of Scriptures. However, I am not limiting this study to Hebrews 11. We may jump around as the Spirit leads…

Let’s begin with the Biblical definition of faith:

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)

First, I want to look at substance and evidence in their original Greek.

Substance – hupostasis (hoop-os’-tas-is): assurance guarantee, reality, essebce, confidence, that which is the basis of something.

Evidence – elegchos (el’-eng-khos): proof, conviction, persuasion.

The Amplified Bible puts it nicely…

Now faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things we hope for, being the proof of things we do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses].

And of course, the Webster’s dictionary definition…

Faithconfidence or trust in a person or thing.

We must have faith to even be a Christian. You must be believe that Jesus really is the Son of God, died on the cross for your sins, and rose on the third day. We were not there. We did not actually “see” all of this occur. However, we believe it. Why? Because we have FAITH in what the Word says. We have FAITH that our sins are forgiven and that Jesus is sitting at the Right Hand of the Father speaking on our behalf.

That is what faith is…believing without seeing. Now you know what faith means and that you HAVE a measure of faith.

(I bet you can’t wait to find out what’s next ;)

Let’s Pray,

Daddy God, thank You for Your Word. Thank You for Your Truth. Thank You for giving me a measure of faith. Thank You for Your Son. Thank You for forgiving me of all my sins. Please help me to learn everything I can about faith so that I may put it into practice in my life. Thank You. In Jesus Mighty Name, Amen.

In His Love and Service,

Lara ;)
