Bride Wars – Movie Review

Movie Title: Bride Wars
Rating: PG
Director: Gary Winick
Staring: Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Chris Pratt, Steve Howey, Candice Bergen and Kristen Johnston
Category: Comedy

Moms of Faith Rating: 8 out of 10

Intro: Bride Wars is a humorous film about two best friends who turn on each other once they realize they are set to have their weddings on the same day.

Review: I took my teenage daughter to see this film. Bride Wars is most definitely a chick flick. LOL. My husband was happy to miss it. Yes, it may be chicky, but it is also very funny. We laughed a lot and enjoyed most of the movie.

Key word word being “most.” There are a few negatives that I had to address. We had our “lecture” time, after the film, of course. LOL. A few of the negatives were; scantily clad women throughout the film…a serious topic for boys. There was a bachelorette party held at a male strip club and the men stripped down to tiny little man panties. It was actually quite funny watching my teenage daughter look at the screen in horror. We had a nice chat about that as well. ;)

Unfortunately, both couples were living and sleeping together unmarried. That is always a tough one as a Mother. You try to teach your kids what is the right way to do things and everywhere you look is a contradiction to what you are trying to instill.

Language was not great. It did not get too horrid though. Several ill mannered words and conversations were unnecessary. However, they were there and if you watch it with your kids, you will decide what needs to be discussed.

Conclusion: Overall, Bride Wars was a funny film and they came to their senses by the end of the film. However, as always, there are nice topics for you to discuss with your kids.

It is a great opportunity to have important bonding conversations after you watch a movie. When we watch movies that require “talking” afterward…I actually enjoy the nice conversations I have with my daughters MORE than I did watching the film!

Celebrating Summer Holidays At Home

Holidays on the road can be hectic. The packing and the traffic alone can make you rethink your extended weekend plans. A great alternative to traveling on those summer holidays is to spend them in the comfort of your own home. Summer is perfect for family bonding time. The kids are out of school and life seems to move at a slower pace. Some of our best memories are made right in our own backyard!

Picnics are one of my favorite ways to celebrate summer. Throw a big blanket on the grass, prepare the families favorite sandwiches, make a fresh fruit salad, some homemade lemonade, a light dessert, and let the summer tunes blare. Play games the whole family will enjoy, try board games, put up a volleyball net, play kick ball, or throw a Frisbee around.

Summer holidays are made for fun gatherings. Nothing says summer more than a barbecue. Choose one of the holidays of summer and invite friends and family over for a good old fashion barbecue. Fire up the grill, and throw on some burgers, steaks, and hot dogs. If you aren’t able to provide everything for the cookout ask everyone to bring a small side dish. Try making it healthy by adding plenty of grilled vegetables, crisp salads, and refreshing fruit desserts.

Having a block party, is a great way to become acquainted with your neighbors. Instead of having just a block party, turn it into a fundraiser. Have the kids set up a lemonade stand or perform a talent show, have a bake sale, sell raffle tickets, or simply ask for donations. Show your children they can have fun while helping out a good cause.

When the sun goes down, don’t head indoors just yet. Stay outdoors and enjoy the cool summer night. A fire pit is a good investment for those summer evenings. Roast marshmallows, make some S’mores, and most importantly take time to find out what is happening in everyone’s life. In other words, slow down and enjoy one another’s company. Every day is a blessing. Take time to enjoy the simple pleasures in life that God has given you, your family and friends, your home, a cool breeze on a summer night, and the laughter of your kids playing in the yard.

Enjoy the Summer at Home!

Quiet Game

The quiet game is a MUST for every Mother. LOL! It is simple and can be “played” by toddlers AND teenagers! Of course the little ones take a couple times to understand that there is something in it for them if they win! How do you play? I am so glad that you asked… LOL! Simple. The person who can be quiet the longest wins the game! And you give them an age appropriate prize. Let me tell you, you will only get like 5 minutes top in the beginning…BUT…after a few times of seeing the other win a prize, you kids will WANT to play the quiet game and you will be looking at like 15-30 min of silence. Pure heaven! When do you play?? When you are about to lose your mind from the noise announce “Quiet Game Time!” Let me know how it goes…LOL.

Book Review and Give a Way! (the coffee mom’s devotional)

The Coffee Mom’s Devotional This is a great book for busy Moms. It is written by Celeste Palermo, a Christian Mother of two girls.

It features 30 brief devotionals filled with humorous coffee puns and latte for the soul. You know it is written by a fellow Mom and that makes it all the better to read and receive. Who better to minister to a Mom then another Mom??

Each devotion is only about 2 pages long. However, packed with a spiritual punch that will light your fire better than any espresso shot Starbucks has to offer!

Another great feature The Coffee Mom’s Devotional has is at the end of each devotional there are a couple thought provoking questions that tie in with that devotion. There are also a few minor assignments for further reflection and study.

I think this is an awesome book and it is filled with lots of humor and truths from God’s Word that get your motor revving way better then a cup of joe!

Hairball Terminator

If you have cats, then you most certainly encountered the dreaded hairball. Well, I have found a simple trick that helps keep hairballs at bay. Vaseline. Yep, you read right, Vaseline. Take a dollop and put it on the bridge of their nose or top of paw and they will lick it all off. It helps break  up the hairballs and allows them a better opportunity to pass the normal way. LOL. It works for my cats and if you read the ingredients on expensive “hairball” terminators, petroleum jelly is the main ingredient.

Note: check with your vet first.

Instilling Christ Like Character in Your Children

Christ-like character is an essential part of being a Christian. Talking the talk is easy, but walking the walk is when we are really tested. One of the most important things you can do for your child is to help them develop Christ-like character. Jesus is our model of how we should live our life, and treat others. In our society children are faced with incredible peer pressure and temptation. Unfortunately, morals and values have taken a back seat. Teaching children to strive to have good character is our responsibility as Christian parents. First, we have to examine our own character and behavior. Do we exhibit love, kindness, courage, patience, and forgiveness? Who are we when no one else is looking? Of course we will fall short because no person is perfect, only Jesus is. But we can make every effort to walk in the path of Jesus, and teach our children by example, what good character is.

Character Builders

What builds up character? Below are some characteristics that we want our character to consist of. We should try to instill these character builders into our own lives so that we can serve God and give our children a good Christian example to follow.

  • Patience
  • Kindness
  • Honesty
  • Courage
  • Loving
  • Forgiving

Character Breakers

Just as our character is built up by the characteristics that Jesus possessed, there are also character breakers. If any of these characteristics become embedded in your character they will move you further away from God.

  • Anger
  • Bitterness
  • Being Judgmental
  • Unwillingness to Forgive
  • Dishonesty
  • Hypocrisy
  • Impatient
  • Gossiping

Children watch us closely in all situations. If you are gossiping about Sue’s marriage breaking up and casting judgment on her and your children hear you, they will absorb your actions and more than likely repeat them. You are their example, and a representative of Christ. If children think you are a hypocrite they will not take you or the morals you are attempting to instill in them seriously. I have a relative who is completely turned off by Christianity because of the bad example set by their mother who claimed to be a Christian and was unforgiving, bitter, and judgmental. What we do will mold our children. Here are a few suggestions on helping your child develop Christ like character.

Walk the Walk of A Christian

The best advice I have is to look at the woman in the mirror. Pray and ask God to reveal any area of your character that needs work. Do you need to work on being more patient? Are you unforgiving? What needs done to get your character in alignment with Jesus Christ? Remember you are a blue print for your children to follow.

Utilize Teachable Character Moments

There is nothing like real life situations that get the point across. Look for moments that you can use to teach your child good character. If they had a fight with a friend, explain the importance of forgiveness and apologizing. Give them examples, of how Jesus handled situations. Whenever, there is a character breaker rearing its’ ugly head take advantage of it by making it a teachable moment. These little teachable moments help mature our child’s good character.

Don’t Condone the Character Breakers

One of the worst things you can do as a parent is to turn the other cheek when you know they have done something wrong. Doing this only condones their behavior and you are contributing to building a weak character in your child. Correct them with love and wisdom, and not harsh criticism. Address the situation and tell them why you do not agree with their actions, and make it clear that it won’t be tolerated. A good example of this is lying. If they know they can lie to you they will keep doing it not only to you, but also to others. Set the rules and enforce them.

Encourage and Compliment Christ Like Character

It is important as positive role models that we encourage our children. Don’t be quick to point out their failures and bad behavior. However, make it a point to acknowledge all of the positive and wonderful things they do. A little honey goes a long way. When you notice your child exhibiting Christ like character applaud them for it, let them know that you are proud of them. More importantly let them know how pleased God is when his children are following in the footsteps of Christ.

Pray with Your Children

If you notice one of the character breakers are riding their back, take a moment to pray with them. For example, if they are having a hard time being patient, discuss the issues they are facing, and pray together for the God to improve that area of their character.

God wants us to be faithful followers and possess good character. He gives us our children as gifts. It is our responsibility to teach them his principals and virtues. The world is tough, but if we can give them a good foundation at home then they will be well equipped to face the obstacles that lie on the unforeseen path ahead.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. -Proverbs 22:6

Bedtime Stories – Movie Review

Bedtime Stories - Christian Movie ReviewMovie Title: Bedtime Stories
Rating: PG
Director: Adam Shankman
Staring: Adam Sandler; Courteney Cox; Keri Russell; Russell Brand; Richard Griffiths; Guy Pearce and Lucy Lawless
Category: Comedy

Moms of Faith Rating: 6 out of 10

Intro: A fairly decent comedy starring one of my least favorite actors, Adam Sandler.

Review: I would like to just ponder for a moment…what is it with Walt Disney pictures and the lack to complete and healthy families?? Yet another film with a single parent. Sure, there are MANY single parents out there and I am not trying to put them down. It’s just man, can we have some happily married couples? It’s alarming how few there are in Disney films…

OK, rant off…LOL…back to Bedtime Stories

This was a comedy that stayed cleaner than I expected. One of the reasons I am not fond of Adam is he likes to star in comedies that have crude humor. I believe we can make funny films that do not make use of crudeness.

It is certainly NOT crude free. However, a lot less crude than what I would normally expect. LOL!

Conclusion: There may have been less crude humor, but there was no lack of poor character building. There were quite a few bad lessons in the movie. Children take these movies seriously. They learn that lying, cheating, and adult encouraging a 6 year old boy to kiss girls, (as well as many other not very good “lessons” can be found in this film) are funny and “light.”

My little one was repeating some stuff I did not like…we had to have a pow wow….or as my teenager likes to call it, a “lecture.” Guess what though? My teenager actually appreciates my lectures! WOW! Go figure!

It is definitely a film that will require a nice chat with your younger children when it is over. Keep in mind, as Christian Mothers, we need to make sure we are aware that it is never “just a movie.” What we see and hear affects us more than we realize or care to admit. As Mothers, we have the responsibility to train our children up and teach them what is right and what is not.

Faith Comes by Hearing

It was OK. However, I do not think I will buy this film so that my girls can watch it over and over.

Do you diligently Seek Him?

But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder to them that diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)

We know that we cannot please God without faith. We can’t even be a Christian without faith. Besides Christ of course, faith is the foundation Christianity. You cannot even become a Christian without believing in something you have never actually seen. You become a Christian by faith.

I really want to focus on the second part of this Scripture today.

…He is a rewarder to them that diligently seek Him.

Diligently and seek come from the same Greek word, ekzeteo (ek-zay-teh’-o) and mean; investigate, crave. To seek diligently or earnestly after, namely God, with a sincere and earnest desire to obtain His favor.

I also looked up a couple words in the Webster’s Dictionary…

Diligently – constant and earnest effort and application; attentive and persistent in doing something.

Earnest - serious in intention, purpose, or effort; sincerely zealous.

We forget that God is a REWARDER. When we dive into the Word and seek His Face consistently and with zeal, He will reward us. He is our Daddy in Heaven, and like any parent (although He is the BEST), He wants to reward His children.

Our motive cannot be to get “stuff” from God. Otherwise, we aren’t really seeking Him, we treating Him more like a genie in a bottle. And God does not participate in those types of games.

I thought it would be interesting to look at the flip side of the Greek word ekzeteo. There are three words I found in my Greek dictionary that are its antonyms.

ameleo - to neglect.

oligoreo - to regard or esteem lightly

paratheoreo – to overlook.

You see, we will ALWAYS reap what we sow. If we sow His Word into our hearts, we will reap; joy, peace, wisdom, comfort, life, prosperity, healing, happiness, and a love that we can find NO where else. However, if we neglect our Beloved and overlook His place in our lives, we will be sowing a selfish seed to the flesh. And we will reap; sadness, loneliness, incompleteness, death, sickness, and poverty. We will NEVER be truly filled until we put HIM FIRST in our hearts, minds, and lives!

I encourage you to make time for your God. Make Him THE priority in your life. When you do…when you REALLY do, you will NEVER be the same. And you will be GLAD that you’re not.

Let’s Pray,

Daddy God, thank You for Your Truth. Thank You for Your love. Thank You for giving me so many reasons to love You. Thank You for wanting to know me and wanting me to seek You. Thank You for creating me with a purpose. I love You, Lord. I want nothing more than to know You better and be all that You created me to be. Help me to know You better. Thank You. In Jesus Mighty Name, Amen.

Alexa and Your Website

If you have a website, it’s Alexa ranking is important if you want paid advertisers. Even though it is NOT the all knowing factor on the web as far as traffic. Many people use it and believe that is is all knowing. Because of this, Alexa cannot be ignored if you want to have paid advertisers. Alexa ranking is also important for a lot of paid to post positions. So, like it or not, improving Alexa ranking is a must.

I have been doing an interesting experiment over at Home Business Resource Directory. It is called The Alexa Experiment.” It’s purpose is to find out what impact Alexa has on real traffic and if we can improve our ranking with them. The experiment is also looking into what helps with ranking and what does not.

So far, it has been a positive experience. I have noticed a huge drop in my Alexa traffic points and an increase in my daily traffic. I am no where near where I want to be…yet. However, there has been a steady drop and that is a good thing in the Alexa world.

I encourage you to follow along with the experiment and see what happens. If it all works out then we have proven Alexa works and how to make our Alexa traffic rankings better. If it does not work, it is still a positive, because we have proven that all the hype about Alexa is just that…hype.

Feel free to share any tips you have to improve Alexa Ranking with your fellow Moms of Faith website owners below!

Tuesday’s Mommy Tip – Pimples be Gone!

OK, on to this week’s Mommy tip

Pimples be Gone!

This beauty tip is for Moms and those raising teenagers. Pimples are no fun for anyone. Obviously washing your face is a sure fire way of preventing unwanted pimples. LOL! However, no matter how often you wash, and how great your skin is, if you are human, you will most likely suffer from a pimple at some point in your life!

Good News! I have discovered a few ways that get rid of them quickly….

Citrus. Cut a lemon or lime in half and sub it on affected area before bed. This dries it up pretty quick. You should notice improvement when you wake up.

Preparation H. Yep. Hard to believe, huh? A little dab will do ya. Just a little and the pimple will begin to disappear within a day.

Moisturize. This is more of  a prevention. Wash your face and then moisturize it with a good quality moisturizer that fits your skin type. Believe it or not moisturizing helps keep the pimples away. My teenager does this and has minimal pimple outbreaks.

I hope these tips help you eliminate those unwanted pimples! If you have any other tips for keeping them away or getting rid of them quickly, post below!
