Celebrating Summer Holidays At Home

Holidays on the road can be hectic. The packing and the traffic alone can make you rethink your extended weekend plans. A great alternative to traveling on those summer holidays is to spend them in the comfort of your own home. Summer is perfect for family bonding time. The kids are out of school and life seems to move at a slower pace. Some of our best memories are made right in our own backyard!

Picnics are one of my favorite ways to celebrate summer. Throw a big blanket on the grass, prepare the families favorite sandwiches, make a fresh fruit salad, some homemade lemonade, a light dessert, and let the summer tunes blare. Play games the whole family will enjoy, try board games, put up a volleyball net, play kick ball, or throw a Frisbee around.

Summer holidays are made for fun gatherings. Nothing says summer more than a barbecue. Choose one of the holidays of summer and invite friends and family over for a good old fashion barbecue. Fire up the grill, and throw on some burgers, steaks, and hot dogs. If you aren’t able to provide everything for the cookout ask everyone to bring a small side dish. Try making it healthy by adding plenty of grilled vegetables, crisp salads, and refreshing fruit desserts.

Having a block party, is a great way to become acquainted with your neighbors. Instead of having just a block party, turn it into a fundraiser. Have the kids set up a lemonade stand or perform a talent show, have a bake sale, sell raffle tickets, or simply ask for donations. Show your children they can have fun while helping out a good cause.

When the sun goes down, don’t head indoors just yet. Stay outdoors and enjoy the cool summer night. A fire pit is a good investment for those summer evenings. Roast marshmallows, make some S’mores, and most importantly take time to find out what is happening in everyone’s life. In other words, slow down and enjoy one another’s company. Every day is a blessing. Take time to enjoy the simple pleasures in life that God has given you, your family and friends, your home, a cool breeze on a summer night, and the laughter of your kids playing in the yard.

Enjoy the Summer at Home!
