20 Fun Ways to Enjoy Family Night without Technology

Lets think back to the good old days when owning a TV was a luxury. OK, we won’t go that far back. When was the last time you and your family did something together without the use of electronic devices such as TV, computer, or game stations? You can’t remember? Uh oh, that’s not good. Well, you’re in for a fun surprise… There are tons of fabulous things you can do with your family without technology— and without breaking the bank. Below are 20!

20 Fun Ways to Enjoy Family Night without Technology

1. Games
Introduce your childhood favorite board games such as Monopoly, Scrabble, Trivia Pursuit, Life, Crib, or Yahtzee. You can also play games like, Cranium, Apples to Apples, and so forth. Card games are always fun: Crazy 8s, Go Fish, War, Concentration, etc.

2. Community Center
Go swimming, ice-skating, play badminton, volleyball, basketball etc.

3. Bowling
5 pin for younger kids and 10 pin for older kids. Try to get in when it’s laser or glow in the dark bowling night.

4. Crafts
If you and your family enjoy making crafts, think about the upcoming season. You can make cards, name tags, gift tags, or gift bows. Decorate recycled jars into decorative vases.

5. Stargazing
Go find higher ground, look at the stars and learn about the constellation.

6. Camping
You don’t have to venture out far… just in your backyard. Pitch your tent, get some food to grill and have a camp out. You can play “Chubby Bunny” a game to see who can put the most marshmallows in their mouths, but you have to be able to say, “Chubby Bunny”. Go in a circle with each taking one turn. Who do you think will win?

7. House Projects
I’m there is plenty of things to do around the house. There’s always cleaning of old toys or old clothes. Pick a room and work on it together.

8. Genealogy
Create a family tree together. It’s a good way for the kids to learn more about their ancestors.

9. Scrapbook
There are many themes you could create for a scrapbook. The birth and growing years of each of your children, your wedding, your vacations etc.

10. Cooking or Baking
You can try out new recipes together or have a friendly bake off. Which team can make the best cookies?

11. Puzzles
Work on a jigsaw puzzle together or help each other figure out a crossword puzzle.

12. Slumber Party
Build a fort and have a slumber party. Play charades, board games, dance… Just have fun.

13. Take a Walk Down Memory Lane
Bring out your photo albums and talk about your family history.

14. Go for Walks
Enjoy and explore your neighborhood and parks. Sit on the swing, take pictures or play Frisbee or throw a Nerf football around.

15. Write a Story
Get a notebook, then start a story. Pass it around and take turns writing your story. When the story ends, choose someone to read it aloud. You’ll be amazed at the creative thoughts written by your kids.

16. Practice for Emergencies
If you have young kids at home, it’s a good idea to rehearse and remind them what to do in case of an emergency. What you would do if there’s a fire, or an earthquake etc. Come up with some scenarios and get the family to act them out. This is also a good time to check and replace anything in your first aid kit or emergency food box.

17. Culture Night
Learn about a new culture and dine on ethnic foods.

18. Family Recipe Book
Create a family recipe book. Have everyone choose their favorite recipes. The kids can draw pictures of their favorite foods.

19. Talent Show
Put on a talent show and invite the grandparents who can be judges.

20. Family Journal
Start a family journal and have everyone write in it daily what they are thankful for. Create a book cover, add pictures etc.

    I feel like technology is just taking over this day and age! There are a lot of great ideas listed here! I think bowling is so much fun…it’s a great family activity!
