Last week we talked about what NOT to do. This week, let’s talk about something we all SHOULD do: Develop our leadership skills.
John C. Maxwell is my favorite leadership teacher. He is a Christian author and speaker and I’ve had the great privilege of attending one of his conferences when I was on church staff. I quote him quite often! His main slogan is this: “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” As I sit here writing this column, my “Leadership Promises for Everyday” book by John C. Maxwell is staring me in the face. He begins by stating this truth: “God is the Ultimate Leader, and He calls every believer to lead others…Every time God desired to do something great, He called a leader to step forward.” And I believe the Lord still does this today.
Each one of us has been given a circle of influence. We all have people who depend on us. Whether it’s our immediate family, our co-workers, ministry groups, or people on our home-business teams…we’ve all got someone to lead.
Leadership is a gift and a responsibility. “Great gifts mean great responsibilities; greater gifts, greater responsibilities!” Luke 12: 48 MSG.
And in other words: “to whom much is given, much is expected.” We all have a responsibility to those that we lead. Whether you like it or not, people are looking up to you and expecting you to get it right! We all mess up of course, but we can even show great leadership by our responses and actions when we fail (see “Failing Forward” by John C. Maxwell). Are you leading well? Are you getting it right? Are you following the “Ultimate Leader” and seeking His plan for your life and your business?
Here’s your Faith and Business 101 assignment for this week: Start developing your leadership skills. Step one is to seek wisdom from the Ultimate Leader each and every day. Have you ever read Proverbs? Proverbs is a great book when you are seeking wisdom in any aspect of life. Step two is to dive into some great books on Leadership. My favorite is “Developing the Leader Within You” by…you guessed it: John C. Maxwell! You can also follow his blog which has amazing teaching and tips for becoming a better leader. For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6 NIV
Until next time…
