“When I Grow Up, I…”

Do you ever find yourself in a moment when occasionally you just have to turn your head away to keep your kids from seeing the grin on your face?  I’m telling you, there are moments when I just have to wonder where these guys come up with this stuff.  This whole “mom” thing  just cracks me up sometimes!  You?  (In a minute, I’ll tell you what Isaac, our 8 year old, said – this time!)So, I’m sure you moms, dads, caregivers, grandparents, etc., have all come across the moment when your little one wants to share with you their aspirations of what they want to be when they grow up.  Right?  These are some of my favorite moments, ever!  Those precious moments when I hear my hottlings say to me, “Mom!  When I grow up, I want to be a _____!”  And the list is endless!Have you ever read the book with your kids by Dr. Seuss called “Maybe You Should Fly a Jet!  Maybe You Should Be a Vet!”?Here’s what goodreads.com has to say about it: “Every child … [Read more...]





The Final Hurdle – Part 2

The Final Hurdle – Finale!  (continued from last week's column)“Violet’s Mom!  Violet’s Mom!”  My heart was still racing from the fall when I realized that there was someone yelling in the crowd, “Does anyone know Violet’s Mom?!”Wait.  I do!  That’s me.  “VIOLET”S MOM!  Where IS she?”“I’m right here!  What’s going on?!”  It was immediately following Violet’s first 200 meter hurdle race on our hometown track.  Violet, our 12 year old daughter, is showing promise and a heart for hurdle jumping.  After running her best, she fell right at the final hurdle and in front of a cheering crowd.  Her right toe clipped the bar at the exact moment she caught my eye in the crowd.  She blew her focus and crashed to the ground.Amidst all the commotion, Violet was scuttled off behind the track building where the EMT was cleaning up some pretty bloody knees.  The announcer was calling for the next group of runners over the p.a. system, when … [Read more...]





The Final Hurdle

Do you ever feel like your day is just a looong series of one hurdle after the other? When you get up in the morning, have you ever looked ahead to the next 14-16 hours (or more) and find them full of just one event after the other: like school runs, dentist appointments, piano lessons, grocery shopping, soccer practice, job stuff, laundry, cleaning toilets, dishes, cooking, etc.? Yikes! I’m sometimes exhausted before I even get out of bed in the morning. You?Sometimes, being a mom is like running a race everyday. We arise at the starting line and just take off at the sound of the alarm clock. Then throughout the day, I am jumping over hurdle after hurdle – running kids around, feeding family and friends, kissing boo-boos, until finally I hit the end of the day’s race for the final hurdle, bedtime.
