Leah and Rachel’s struggles have much to teach us about being a wife. I want to first explore each woman and her struggle separately and then conclude with how the Lord has used these two women to teach a lesson I did not anticipate.

Let’s take our first look at Leah.

I think it is important to point out that her name means “weary”. Leah was not a chosen wife but one thrust upon her husband out of trickery. In those times, it was proper for the older daughter to marry before the younger. However, in this case the groom preferred the younger daughter. As a result, Leah felt unloved. She spent her entire marriage desperately trying to get her husband to love her. Once she gave birth to her son she felt as if finally her husband would love her. She was so confident of this that she named her son Reuben which means “the Lord has seen my affliction”. Sadly, she was wrong. As we see today having a child does not heal a marriage. I suppose the idea that women will do anything to gain the love of a man is not a new concept. Poor Leah, tried so hard to gain the love she was missing by continuing to provide sons for her husband yet she was never successful. She was a faithful woman who prayed to God and leaned on him for answers. Yet even that did not change her pain or her situation. She had the love of the Lord and that was the only love that she needed yet she could not give her quest to make Jacob love her.

She did not know it then but God did have a reason for her to be in this marriage. She did serve a purpose through her pain. Leah is the mother of Judah which in turn makes her the ancestral mother of the Davidic line which is the line of Christ. God proves to us that despite the agendas of man or woman His will cannot be altered. This also teaches that we cannot always see the purpose in our struggles yet we still need to trust in the Lord’s plan.

Rachel

Rachel, on the other hand, is the beautiful woman whom Jacob truly loves. Due to her father’s plot, Rachel is denied Jacob only to later share him with her sister. One would think that even through this difficulty Rachel would be happy in her marriage. What woman would not be honored and blessed to have a man that loves her as much as Jacob loved Rachel? However, Rachel had a problem that colored everything. As you may remember, Rachel was barren; however this was not the root of her problem as she believed. The root of her problem was her jealousy toward her sister. Rachel may have had Jacob’s love but Leah had his sons. The green eyed monster of jealousy began to rear its ugly head and consume Rachel. This beauty would soon turn into a beast.

The Lesson

Leah was not immune to this contest as she took great pride in her ability to provide sons for Jacob. Leah was so jealous of her sister having Jacob’s love that she threw Rachel’s barrenness in her face. Rachel was seeing so much green that she lost her way and forgot about the Lord. She went to Jacob and demanded that he provide her a son. How often do we make irrational demands based solely on our own insecurity? Jacob was not to blame for her inability to conceive a child. Yet, forgetting her duty to submit and respect her husband she blamed him. A frustrated Jacob responds in anger and tells her that he cannot change the will of God. Now, when was the last time the will of God stopped a determined woman from at least trying to do what she thought was best? Rachel was surely not taking no for an answer. She did not turn to the Lord. She had a better idea. Rachel tired to circumvent the Lord by having her maidservant bare a son in her place. Soon Rachel learned that going outside the will of God afforded her nothing. Leah matched and beat Rachel at every turn in the area of maternity. Rachel was so jealous and obsessed with HER goal that she fell away from the Lord and discounted the love of her husband.

Leah and Rachel were so involved in their own individual quests and jealous contest that each failed to see the love in front of them. Rachel had the love of Jacob. Leah had the love of the Lord. Each could have had love for one another. The sisters could have joined together for support instead of tearing each other down. In the midst of all this both suffered in their marriage. Each allowed their own agenda and suffering to be a shadow over their duty as wives and women of faith.

One last point I wanted to make is another aspect that the Lord has taught me concerning these two women. Leah was not the intended wife, yet she was ever present and impacted the relationship of the intended wife. Jacob would never say he loved Leah yet he was powerless to give her up. She also provided him with something he needed; his sons. Are you sharing your husband with another? Is your Leah in the form of his family, his friends, sports, his job, an addiction, or video games? Could it be that you are currently involved in a struggle so intensely that you are loosing sight of what you are fighting for? Do you feel your husband has a need being provided for by another source? If you feel you are not the object of your husband’s love you may fight against yourself to the point that you can’t see the love in front of you. Are you the woman spoke of in Proverbs who tears down her house with her own hands? Whatever the case maybe Leah and Rachel proved that this battle has no victor. They showed us how we can easily get so caught up in our own insecurity that we loose sight of what is important. When struggles come, and they will, we need to cling to the Lord for guidance. It can be tempting when you want something so badly to circumvent the Lord to achieve your purpose. During times of struggle we become impatient and self centered. The Lord has His own timetable and when it appears to conflict with our own we need to trust and obey. The Lord is interested in the success of our marriages. He is the only one who can change hearts and heal the wounded. Turn to the Lord and be patient and trust that he does have a plan for your life and your marriage.

JumpStart is a wonderful company that offers a variety of educational items for children. In fact, JumpStart is one of my favorite companies when it comes to educational games and products. Trusted by parents and educators for years, Jumpstart always provides quality and education in a fun and effective manner.

Wii Nintendo, is another family company that has long since provided quality entertainment. Wii turned sitting and staring at a screen with a remote in your hand to getting up, laughing and playing with the whole family. Many who are not fans of video games, have changed their minds when it comes to the Wii. It is one the most used “games” in my house on rainy days and family game nights.

So, it is not surprising that I jumped out of my computer chair and could not type fast enough to accept the chance to review JumpStart Get Moving: Family Fitness with Brooke Burke for the Wii. The combination of JumpStart and Wii is always a pleasure, but this game sounded like just the thing for active play on rainy or snowy days. JumpStart sees the need for children to be physically active, moreover, for families to be physically active together. So, JumpStart and Wii melded their talents and became the peanut butter and jelly of family fitness Wii games. Families who exercise together are families who stay healthy together.

JumpStart Get Moving has a variety of features that will keep you challenged while keeping it fun!

* 18 fun sports games that use your Wii remote, Nunchuck and the Balance Board.

*Play by yourself or with others to add to the fun! You can even compete head to head with your family or friends.

* Customized routines.

* Unlockable items based on fitness and gaming progression.

From balancing on an Egyptian Pyramid to playing Baseball with your family, you will find that burning calories can be fun and a family affair. While, designed for ages 3-10, this game breaks the barrier on age range. This cannot replace a workout routine or outdoor physical activity but it can encourage exercise, allow you to burn calories, and turn indoor play into constructive physical play.

She sat holding her baby with tears streaming down her face. As the nurse explained the hospital admitting procedures, she heard not a word. After being told by the doctor that her baby had to be admitted to the hospital for possible meningitis, her mind left the office, unwilling to face the result of previous sin that continued to haunt her.

Her mind took her back a few years, when she walked into the clinic with mixed emotions all tied up neatly in a bow of denial…

She did not allow herself to be swayed but stayed the course of fear. When fear is at the helm there is no telling what measures you will take to satisfy that beast. She can not blame youth, ignorance, or lack of companionship. She allowed fear to overtake her and dictate her actions. Fear drove her to the clinic that day to put an end to a reality she was unready to face. She could not bring herself to say the word. Abortion. She could not bring herself to read the word. Abortion. Yet she brought herself to have a procedure done. Abortion.

Sitting in the Abortion Clinic’s waiting room caused her to use great effort not to think about where she was and what she was about to do. She was raised in a Christian home. She had committed herself to a life honoring to God. How could she so easily turn away from her bible and turn to fear? She asked herself this question many times but never waited for an answer. Even now, as she sat in the waiting room, she did not allow herself to answer.

Her throat felt like it was going to close as her name was called. She just wanted this over with. It felt like a dream and she had hoped that upon waking she would be able to dismiss it as easily. She laid on the table only thinking that she wanted things just to go back to normal. This memory could not be forged in her mind. She grew angry at every sound and move that would alter this haziness into a clear picture.

“Ma’am, are you okay…will your husband be meeting you at the hospital?”

The nurse’s question brought back to the present in a jolt. She nodded her head yes and grabbed her diaper bag and papers the nurse was handing her. She was now on her way to the hospital to admit her baby for testing.

September. She would never forget the date, September 15th. That was the day she had her “procedure”. Still unable to call it by name, she regrettably remembers the details, even the hazy ones. She remembers what she wore, the face of the nurse, even the weather: 56 degrees and partly cloudy. September held another significance, it was the month her new baby was born. The irony haunted her as much as her guilt. This twisted and turned in her head until she was convinced that the blood on her hands would require justice. Where was the justice for her baby? Her baby was murdered and the murderer walked free only to live an alternate life with a husband and new baby. How can such an act go unpunished? Simply, it could not, it would not. God surely would take this baby away as payment for her previous baby. She was convinced. The irrationality of these thoughts were not questioned. She lived in fear unknowing when and where she would be sentenced for her crime.

She was in a daze as drove to the hospital, admitted her baby and sat in her baby’s hospital room. She allowed the nurses and doctors to believe she was being an over emotional first time mom. She would never reveal her true feelings behind her tears. She knew she did not deserve the kindness and comfort offered to her by the nursing staff.

Her husband arrived and jolted her back into reality again. The nurse explained to him the situation and the tests that would have to be performed. Yet, he was distracted by the reaction of his wife. She felt this distraction and it made her uneasy. She knew that was aware that something else was going on in her head. He was unaware of her irrational thoughts but he knew her reaction was beyond the current situation. Perhaps one day she would tell him how her sin resulted in the death of their little baby girl.

She felt relief and mercy at the news that her baby did not have meningitis and would be fine. In an instant, that relief was replaced by the feeling that justice would continue to hunt her. If not now, when?

Years passed, and her baby girl grew into a healthy beautiful child. While every September birthday reminded her of a September death, she was able to focus more on the joy and less on the pain. Her past now only whispered its intent to seek justice.

Her underlying guilt and unresolved feelings, continued to haunt her throughout several years. She felt hunted by justice and haunted by sin. She did not feel the full weight of her guilt on a daily basis. She lived a happy life tempered ever so slightly by guilt. She breathed again without fear and guilt continually entering her lungs.

She needed to find batteries for her daughter’s new light up toy. As she riffled through a drawer she her heart stopped and her throat felt like it would close. In that drawer was her old Bible. She could not bare to look at it much less open it. She felt her past hit her like a freight train. Not since that cool day in September had she been able to pick up her Bible. It only served to remind her that vengeance was coming for her. She knew Jesus died for her sins but she was unwilling to allow him to carry this burden. How could she? This was hers and hers alone to carry…it was what she deserved. She had now forgotten why she opened that drawer to begin with so she slammed it shut and began to walk away.

She remembered. Forgiveness. With tears and a heavy heart that longed to be free, she opened the drawer again. She trembled as she picked it up. She held it close to her and tears began to stream down her face. Her mind took her back to that day in September, back to the clinic, back to her fear and guilt. The emotion was so strong she almost dropped the Bible. Instead she fell to her knees, now unable to control her sobs, she prayed for the first time in years. She prayed that God would forgive her for such a crime. She realized then that God was not hunting her for justice, He was hunting her for forgiveness and love. She was not being punished by an all powerful God, she was punishing herself. She opened the Bible and began to read.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Years of burden and a heavy heart were needless.

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 1 John 2:1

Through the years she had been selfish. She carried her guilt like a badge of courage, like a pain stick, like she was capable of handling the damage. The Bible that caused her such pain to lay eyes on was now a source of comfort and encouragement once again. She was ready to let go and allow Jesus to carry the burden.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9

She remembered love, faith and forgiveness for the first time since she entered the clinic so many years before. She had not learned how to forgive herself so she rejected the forgiveness of Christ. In doing so, she rejected a life with Christ at the helm and instead handed it over to guilt and fear. Her heart was finally free. She was free to be who God intended her to be as a wife, mother, and servant for Christ. She may have had blood on her hands but the blood of Christ is more powerful and covered her.

She rose from her knees restored, redeemed and renewed. Her tears of torment were replaced by tears of joy in the Lord.

A home filled with children is sure to have its share of snide comments, complaints, whines, insults, and disruptions. My children are not perfect. Each have done their share of complaining, whining and sadly insulting one another. Children are egocentric so they rarely think of how their words affect another person. However, if this behavior continues without proper guidance it will become habitual. Soon the only thing holding your children together is a bond of insulting behavior. Kids are exposed to sibling rivalry in the shows they watch on TV. Often siblings flinging insults are considered a source of comedy. This extends beyond sibling relationships to parent/child relationships, child/teacher relationships, and friend/friend relationships.

Since we need not look to far to see how ungodly this behavior is, how can we allow it occur? Simply we cannot. Yet, every parent knows that this behavior is not easily stopped. As Christian parents, we can model godly behavior and challenge our children to demonstrate godly behavior. We can also take action and discipline for ungodly behavior.

Due to my frustration over my preteen not being able to control her mouth toward her younger brother and seeing this same behavior demonstrated from him to his younger sister, I decided to take action. Discipline was a temporary fix until the next time one annoyed the other. I realized that the heart and thought life needed to change in order for a real transformation to take place. I want my ugly little ducklings to be beautiful swans.

These thoughts and concerns gave birth to the Journal of Thankfulness and Loving Thoughts. Each child has his or her own journal to list things they are thankful for daily. I started out with three items and continually challenge them to increase the list. They are also instructed to list their siblings and write one nice thing about him or her. If I hear them complain about someone or insult someone, that person is then added to the mix. I also add other family members as reminders of why they love them.

How do you make your own?

Supplies needed:

composition book or notebook

printable provided

scissors

tape

Simply print out the printable here. Cut it out to fit the cover of your composition book or notebook and attach with tape. I taped over the label to ensure it would not come off.

If you have a child too young to write, have her draw pictures of what she is thankful for and tell you one nice thing about her siblings a day which you will add to her journal. It is important to write it down for her as you can remind her of what she said during rough times.

This is just one step that needs to be followed by prayer and properly modeled behavior.

Frazzled and frustrated, I try to see the street sign through the blinding sun. Could that finally be the street I have been desperately looking for? As I squint to see the words on the sign, I realize that sadly it is not. I have to face the music and just admit that I am lost. Just as I feel the need to pull over and scream I hear laughter. My kids are in the backseat laughing and playing. They seem to be unaware that we are lost. How is that possible? I have expressed in no uncertain terms that I cannot find my way. If the words were unclear, the expression on my face, my hand hitting the steering wheel every few minutes and my foot constantly hitting the break making the car move in a jerky fashion would be clues enough. As if laughing were not enough, my son points out some type of monument by a park on the other side of the road. This is no time for sightseeing! How can they remain so calm?

Enough was enough! I whip my head around and decide to face these giggle boxes head on. I ask them if they are aware that we have been lost for the past half hour. With confident smiles, they inform me that they are fully aware of the situation. If they are aware that we are lost then how can they remain so calm? The answer was simple. They trusted me to guide them home. My daughter told me that she did not know where we were or when we would get home but she knew we would since I was driving. My son was in agreement. My 4 year old was simply along for the ride and happy as long as she had something to drink. At that moment my frustrating situation became a pleasant adventure. I quietly prayed and we soon found our way back safe and sound.

That event made me think about the confidence and trust our children have in us as parents. My children confidently sat in my car while I was aimlessly driving around only because of the trust they have in me. Do I place that same confidence in the Lord? After all, God is in the driver’s seat in my life. Do I spend my time backseat driving or do I enjoy the adventure because no matter what may come He will guide me safely through?

I am reminded the verse:

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage: be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD they God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. - Joshua 1:9

My children were not dismayed because imperfect me was in the driver’s seat. Well, I have a perfect Father in heaven how can I be dismayed when the road seems bumpy? I need to put my faith in the Lord in all situations and circumstances. Being strong and of good courage is not solely for the good times. It is in the bad times that our good courage glorifies the Lord. My children taught me an important lesson that day. They taught me how to view my Heavenly Father and rejoice in any situation. If you look closely at your children you will see how we can become better sons and daughters of our heavenly Father.

Conceived by Kelly Lester, Easy Lunchboxes, will transform not only how you “do” lunch but how you think about lunch. It is my honor to introduce you to this creative mom with a lovely spirit and a concept that not only is earth friendly but family friendly. Please take the time to read all about Kelly in her bio!

What is Easy Lunchboxes? Easy Lunchboxes is a system that allows you to pack lunches quickly, easily with less packaging all while saving money and promoting healthy eating. Seriously, it does all that! The only thing this systems does not do is pack the lunch. Sorry mom, that’s still your job. However, with these cute containers, I’m sure your kids will love to help out. Each single lid container has three compartments to house a lunch with plenty of space for a sandwich and two sides. You can consult Easy Lunchboxes for some fun lunch ideas to keep your kids and you from getting lunch burnout. Since the Easy Lunchboxes provide room for sides, you no longer have to buy prepackaged foods!

Easy Lunchboxes are affordable. A set of four containers costs $13.95 and a carrying case (which comes in a variety of colors) costs $7.95. So for $21.90 you are done for the year…wait…you are just plain done with lunch. The construction on the containers and the carrying case will last you for years to come. How much are you spending now on plastic baggies and prepackaged foods?

Let’s talk carrying case. The carrying case is the perfect size, and I don’t say that lightly. My husband brings his lunch to work almost daily. I try to stuff as much as I can in his little cooler. Often his thermos or water bottle is left out because there is no room after filling his cooler up with his lunch. The insulated, vinyl-free, carrying case from Easy Lunchboxes, is small enough to carry easily but big enough to house your entire lunch including thermos and ice packs. In fact, I can fit two Easy Lunchboxes containers, a bottle of water and an ice pack! Really. Now, it might bit stuffed but it can be done. To distinguish your lunch carrying case you can add a clip on or key ring decoration which you can easily change as often as you like.

I am giving this item highest marks on quality, efficiency, ease of use, usefulness, economical and earth friendly.

Sometimes I sit and wonder if my standard issue personal force field, that comes with salvation, needs to be sent back up for repair. Or worse yet, the angels neglected to give me one. How is your personal force field working? Does it need a tune up?

Of course, there is no standard issue personal force field that comes with salvation. I will admit when I first found Christ, I truly believed that somehow trials would cease to exist. As I matured I realized that quite simply life goes on as usual. The sun still goes up and comes down, my bills are still delivered, illness still occurs, and my car still gets a flat, even in the face of my secure eternal soul. What is not the “usual” is my heart, my joy, and my security in Christ. My surroundings may still be of old but my mind is renewed.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2

An obstacle for many Christians is the concept of suffering after accepting Christ. This is not confined to the newly saved but often occurs in even the most mature Christian. Intellectually, we know that we will not be without trials in our lives. However, when the most heartbreaking of trials knocks on a Christian’s door feelings of disappointment or anger toward God are common. We wonder how a loving God who promises blessings and joy can allow such heartbreak to enter our lives. Trials do not mean that God loves us less nor that we should loose joy in the hope that is Christ. Suffering is not only unavoidable in this sinful world but to be expected.

Beloved, do not be surprised as the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you. 1Peter 4:12

Be encouraged that God did provide a personal force field…the blood of Christ. This force field allows trials to shape you and bring glory to God’s name and mercifully never allows anything you cannot handle.

I am reminded of a song by Natalie Grant called Held.

Who told us we’d be rescued?
What has changed and why should we be saved from nightmares?
We’re asking why this happens
to us who have died to live,
it’s unfair.

Chorus:
This is what it means to be held.
How it feels when the sacred is torn from your life
and you survive.
This is what it is to be loved,
and to know that the promise was
when everything fell we’d be held.

This hand is bitterness.
We want to taste it, let the hatred know our sorrows.
The wise hands opens slowly to lilies of the valley and tomorrow.

Allow the Lord to hold you during trials instead of expending energy being angry or disappointed. God has not forgotten His promises to you and He will not abandon you but show you His love more vividly during trying times.

This time of year we are faced with all the materialism the world has to offer. One must stop and think of what happened to simple family Christmas tradition that keep the spirit of the holiday alive. Do we remember why we celebrate Christmas? Sugar Plum dreams fill our heads but is there room for Christ and family? This year many families are facing difficult economic times. This causes many to go beyond their means to provide what the world calls a good Christmas or feel depressed for being unable to provide presents. If you feel out of the Christmas spirit due to finances or inability to purchase gifts then you need to re-examine what the Christmas spirit is and how your celebrate it.

Ten simple ways to add the true meaning of Christmas back into your family

1. Special Christmas Breakfast. Every year I make French toast. I cut the toast in half crosswise to make a triangle shape. This serves as the tree. I sprinkle green sugar sprinkles on top to give it color. To finish it off, I use a sausage link for the tree bark. Try something fun for your family!

2. Present for Jesus. Wrap a box but leave a slit at the top where you can insert an index card. Each time a family member does something for Jesus have him or her write down the action on the card and insert in the box. Then on Christmas, open up the box and share with everyone what you gave Jesus this year.

3. Make Prayer Cards out of Greeting Cards. Each time you get a greeting card be sure to put it in a prayer rotation. Have cards lined up on a mantle or make into garland for the tree or however you store your cards, then each night have a family prayer time and pray for each person who sent you a card.

4. Read the Christmas Story. Read the Christmas story out of the bible. Either have dad read the entire story or have family members rotate verses. Do this before you open presents, so you can remember the true reason you should be thankful for another Christmas.

5. Christmas Craft. Every year, my family makes a Christmas craft. The craft changes yearly. One year we made ornaments, the next we made votive candle holders out of flower pots, and the next we made our own Christmas cards. Just choose something! As time goes on, you will be able to decorate your home with your Christmas crafts! I know I would rather see my family’s creations up than something I purchased.

6. Advent Paper Chain. Get red and green construction paper and cut it into thin strips. Then form a circle with one and glue end to end. Next, use an alternating color and attach it to make another circle and glue end to end forming a chain. You can make one link for each day in December up until Christmas day. Before forming the links and the chain, write on the inside a verse, an activity, or permission for a special treat, for the kids to open each day until Christmas.

7. Cookies for the Neighbors. Every year I make cookies for my neighbors. Included in the tin are strips of paper like confetti with printed verses. I also insert a track.

8. Christmas Caroling. When passing out your cookies you want to offer up some Christmas carols for your neighbor’s enjoyment. If you are too shy, then just make singing a regular family tradition.

9. Christmas Decoration Tear Down Day. Taking down decorations should be part of the fun! We make it a family affair because it goes faster and it makes it more fun. Use that time to reflect on the memories surrounded by the decorations, ornaments, gifts, greeting cards and so forth. Reflect on the meaning of Christmas and how you can keep that spirit in the upcoming new year. Then when the work is done play a game, watch a movie or do some fun family activity.

10. Iron Chef Christmas Cookie Competition. We all love Christmas cookies and treats. I am sure every family member has a personal favorite. Well, one day get in the kitchen and whip up some cookies. Split up into teams and make your favorites to share. To make it more fun, have a secret ingredient! Pick out of a hat, a strip of paper with an ingredient on it, like chocolate chips. That will be the challenge secret ingredient for each team. This will make baking so much more fun and personal.

My daughter was so excited to inform me that a stray cat had come to call. This ball of black and white fur sought shelter from the rain on the comfort of our porch. Just as I was about to swoon I hear the pounding of my dog’s paws running down the steps. My dog darted toward the door and pounced with a barking fury. The cat arched her small back and hissed looking directly into my dog’s eyes. I’m not sure if I was more afraid for the cat or my dog. Thankfully the screen door still remained between them. We restrained the dog. Feeling sad for the scared but brave kitty, we gathered up some snacks to feed her. Well, that did it! She now thinks our porch is a restaurant.

I was reminded of scripture while observing this cat’s reactions to the world around her. I wondered if I had the sense of this little cat to seek shelter during storms, face trials head on, all while seeking daily bread.

Come in out of the rain. When the storm hits I sometimes make the mistake of braving it navigating my way through on my own. We think that we need a show of strength and power to drive the storm away. There are times to retreat to God’s shelter to spend time in His presence to regroup. Allow the Lord to reveal Himself as your strong tower and rest in Him so you can revitalize.

For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. Psalm 61

Stand up in the face of fear. After you revitalize and seek the Lord’s guidance now is your time to stand up and face the trial head on. Have faith and remember who you belong to are and what He is capable of achieving. We cannot doubt ourselves with the Lord behind us. Let’s review from Proverbs 29:25 what scripture says about fear and the Lord:

The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.

Seek your daily bread. Our spiritual food comes from the Word of God. If we allow our spirit to starve we will be too weak to fight a trial. The Lord sets food out daily, hoping, His stray kittens come and partake in the feast. We should hunger for this nourishment. Let’s reflect on Psalm 34:17:

The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.

The Lord has provided us with all we need to fight trials and come out not only victorious but stronger. Let’s seek His protection, face our fears through Him and be nourished by His Word and we can face any trial.

I recently assigned a wonderful book to my kids to read for homeschool. I was so excited to receive this book as a review copy from Bethany House Publishers, especially since it was already on my homeschool reading list. Hero Tales by Dave and Neta Jackson, the authors of Trailblazer Books, is part church history, part devotional, and part character study. This book can be used with various age groups and double as a family devotional. The book is geared for children aged six to twelve, however, with guidance you can engage a younger child. An older child could benefit by using this as an outline for further in depth study into one or more of the featured Christians in the book. However, the text would be too simple for a child above the age of 12 to read on his own. If you have have a vast array of age groups this book is best used as a family devotional.

Hero Tales, compiles the lives of Christian heroes from William Tyndale to Harriet Tubman to Dwight L. Moody. The stories are inspirational and teach valuable character traits which glorify God. Each hero is presented by a brief biography and followed by three true stories each focusing on a particular character trait. At the end of each true story there is a verse linking the trait Biblically and three study and discussion questions.

For example the book includes Martin Luther as one of the heroes featured. Martin Luther’s life is briefly outlined for background. Following the short biography, the child will focus on vision, courage and joy in each of the stories on Martin Luther.

These heroes will inspire and teach Godly character. Along the way, your child will begin to learn an overview of church history. You can read this book daily or you can take the time to focus on each hero or a character trait you want to instill in your child. I am using this book with my 11, 9, and 4 year old. I will be assigning my 11 year old to choose a person from the book to write a biography. My 9 year old will focus on writing a few short paragraphs on a character trait that he can begin to implement in his life. My 4 year old, will begin to memorize short verses on the character traits studied. As a family, we will use the questions to open up lines of communication and instill values.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to bring church history, devotional time, and character study to their elementary aged children.
