Names of God – Holy, part one
This is a biggie. So, we will take two devotionals to study the Name Holy.
For I am the Lord your God; so consecrate yourselves and be holy. for I am Holy. Leviticus 11:44
The word Holy in this text comes from the Hebrew word quadowsh (kaw-doshe’) or qadosh (kaw-doshe’) and means; morally sacred, God, a sanctuary, Holy One, clean.
God is not just a “law maker,” He has a purpose for the moral limitations He has placed upon us. It makes me think if Adam and Eve in the Garden. It is not that God wanted to keep something good from them, or prevent them from enjoying life. He was protecting them when He forbid them from eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. He knew that only sadness and heartache would come…
Unfortunately, we have learned nothing from Adam and Eve’s sin. We have jumped on the same road with them. God has given us a moral code to live by in His Word, and yet we find any loop hole we can to indulge in our flesh.
Of course we no longer live under the law. We now have liberty in Christ. However, that is NOT a license to sin and live ungodly lifestyles. We are called to holiness in the New Testament as well. Let us dig deeper…
1Peter 1:14-16 ~ Live as children of obedience to God; do not conform yourselves to the evil desires that governed you in your former ignorance. But as the One Who called is Holy, you yourselves also be holy in all your conduct and manner of living. For it is written, You shall be holy for I am Holy.
Hmmm…let’s spend this week reflecting on the areas in our lives where we are living and conducting ourselves in a less than holy manner. And next week we will discuss some practical applications.
Here are a couple more verses to study: 1 Cor. 5:6-7 and 2 Cor. 7:1
Let’s Pray;
Daddy God, thank You for Your Life giving Word. Thank You for showing me how to live my life so that I may have peace and joy that passes all understanding. Daddy, help me to reflect on these Scriptures during the coming week, and show me the areas in my life that I need to consecrate to You and Your Will. Thank You. In Jesus Mighty Name, Amen.
