Summer Time and the Living is Easy – 5 Family Activities to Try
The summer months were made for fun and lounging in the sun. This is usually the time when parents take some time off and spend it with their kids creating fun family memories. There are a number of simple activities that families can enjoy without shelling out the big bucks.
Five summer Activities to try with your family
Picnic Outside
Nothing beats an old fashioned picnic. Make a picnic lunch with everyone’s favorites, grab a blanket, and a board game and head out to your favorite spot by the lake, park, or even your own backyard. The summer goes quickly so soak up the summer sun while you have a chance. Take time to enjoy nature and while teaching your kids to appreciate the simple outdoors.
Go Hiking or Boating
Hiking is a perfect way to spend time with your kids while getting exercise. Don’t let summer days waste away by lying in front of the television. Get out there and get your heart pumping. If there are trails by your home, schedule a day and go hiking when it isn’t too hot. Take the whole family or do a mom/daughter hike or a dad/son hike. This is a great time to talk and find out what is going on in your children’s lives.
Boating is fairly cheap and is another great method of exercise. Find a lake, rent a canoe or a kayak and enjoy the lull of water. If you want to just relax try tubing.
Go to the Drive In
I loved going to the drive in when I was a kid and it is still high on my list for summer time fun. There aren’t many drive-ins left, but if you can locate one near your home I urge you to get the kids in the car and experience the fun of watching a movie together at the drive in. Bring pillows and blankets and make it a comfy family affair.
Have a Block Party
Block parties are fun for the whole neighborhood. Contact your neighbors and throw a summer block party. Everyone can bring one or two dishes, bring out the grill, and let the kids sell lemonade and make the desserts. The money they earn can be donated to a local charity. Block parties create a sense of community and are fun for all involved.
Go Berry Picking
I love eating delicious fruit in the summer! It is not only refreshing but healthy. One of the activities I enjoy most with my daughter is going berry picking. Find a local farm and look at the berry picking schedule. Get some baskets and go berry picking. Then after you gather all the berries make a desert, like a strawberry or blueberry pie. If you have left over berries freeze them and make smoothies for a hot summer day.
Summer is a time to unwind and relax. Don’t underestimate the fun you can have by just relaxing on your porch with a glass of cold iced tea and the company of your family. Think back to how you spent your summers when you were a child, what were your best memories? Incorporate them into your summer activities with your family. Most of all enjoy the lazy days of summer with the ones you love!
