I love the month of May because it always reminds me to take pause from whatever personal whirlwind I’m in and say thanks to my mom for all the things she’s done for our family. My younger sister and I grew up healthy, happy and well-involved with friends, school and activities. It wasn’t until I grew older that I realized magic wasn’t behind those years – it was mom.

Especially when we’re young, so much of a mother’s work can be taken for granted. Mother’s Day allows us (both young and old) to take a moment to appreciate all the work a mother truly does for her family. That’s why this month, brightpeak financial created the Importance of Mom Photo Contest to celebrate all the important things mom does.

One lucky mom will be chosen to win a $200 Target gift card!

To enter, just go to facebook.com/brightpeakfinancial. Upload a picture of your mom (or you) doing something that your family appreciates. It could be something as simple as tucking your kids in at night, or as hair-raising as getting the carpool on schedule – whatever it is, we want to show the world the big and little things moms do that make a difference.

You can also enter the contest by posting a photo to your Instagram account with the hashtag #ImportanceofMom.

Speaking of mom’s importance, as mom’s yourselves you might know how much your contributions are worth in hugs and kisses, but has anyone ever told you the economic value of being mom?

Thanks to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we know that mom’s economic value in 2013 was $59,862.30 – and that doesn’t include salary from work outside the home. That’s just the value of things like cooking, shopping for the family and caring for the kids.

Check out the fascinating chart below for the breakdown:

And I am fairly certain that the $59,000 is a lowball number. I have heard estimates over $100,000, which sounds a little more on track.

This is a great Mother’s Day contest. I love shopping at Target.

I think you’re underselling it. At LEAST twice that amount to pay a professional for all those things. An in home chef for two meals a day would be $6-8K a MONTH alone. I’m glad that you are sharing how much we are worth!

We moms are overworked and underpaid but I still love my job.
