The Toddy – Iced Coffee Like A Pro
I recently celebrated a birthday, and the one gift my husband got me that wasn’t in the form of a surprise dinner and a day shopping with one of my best friends, was perfect: The Toddy Cold Brew Coffee Maker. I’m sort of an iced coffee addict. I limit myself to one a day, but boy do I look forward to that one. And I’ve tried millions of ways of making it at home and have nursed many a dissapointed attempt with a quick trip to a local coffee shop. Let’s just say this Toddy might answer all of my iced coffee woes.
Let me first say that I’ve been banned occasionally from a coffee shop that will remain nameless.I may not agree with all of their political and social stands, but their coffee and I definitely agree. And while I like to occasionally get a fancy drink with espresso and syrups and foam, I usually keep it simple: “Venti Iced Coffee with three pumps of vanilla syrup and three pumps of class syrup, with a splash of half and half”. I feel like we just got closer, telling you my order is kind of like sharing a heart secret with you. My dad refuses to tell the barista my order, and although my husband gives it a heart attempt, he somehow manages to miss it almost every time. But any true coffee connoisseur knows how many nuances go into making the perfect drink. One pump short, and I can tell. But I think the drive through days might be over.
What does a Toddy do?
It basically cold brews your coffee for you. Unlike a coffee maker, where the water is heated and then filters through the ground coffee beans, the Toddy uses cold and room temperature water to brew coffee over a much longer period of time. The results is a less acidic product that doesn’t have the overcooked flavor that comes from brewing a pot of coffee and then letting it cool. If you’re home cold-brewing, you know that you have to fill a large tub with grounds, soak them in water for 12-18 hours, and then let them drain through cheesecloth over a pitcher. It’s messy. It’s not always fail-proof and I’ve suffered many an iced coffee with too many grounds floating at the top. The Toddy takes away the mess, and simplifies the process. You grind your beans, you add water, you let the Toddy rest for 12-18 hours. You use the Toddy pitcher, which fits perfectly into the Toddy brewer, and no grinds end up in the liquid. It’s perfect. And the best part? The Toddy pitcher is glass, with a perfectly fitting suction top so you don’t let air in to ruin the taste of your iced coffee, making it last far longer than anything I’ve ever home-brewed.
For less than forty bucks, my husband may have solved all of my ridiculous spending at another nameless coffee shop. I’m a believer, the Toddy really does work. My favorite recipe, you ask? I nuke two tablespoons of sugar in one tablespoon of water in the microwave for 45 seconds, then pour it in the bottom of my Ball jar, followed by two cups of iced coffee and a hearty splash of cream and a teeny bit of vanilla extract. Voila! My own DIY iced coffee, which costs a lot less and for me, is worth far more.
