Levi’s Fan Club

When Your Six Year Old Has a Fan Club…

Recently, I was returning home from the bus stop with our three school age children.  Ours is a remote neighborhood; which means that the school bus drops off a load of children about a mile from our house.  Plus, our house is up a private lane which curves another half mile up the side of a steep mountain.  Have I ever told you that we live in West Virginia?

This is one of my favorite times of day.  Is it like that at your house?  The first 15 minutes when you see your children after a long school day?  Ours is always filled with the latest headlines and major news of the day.  Sometimes, I wonder if I should notify CNN.

Violet enjoys sharing the latest fashions of her fellow sixth graders.  Lately, there has also been a bit of drama in the band room since auditions for chairs are underway.  Isaac, on the other hand, rarely discusses any news of school; because it is always “great”.  Rather, he’s engrossed in what’s happening with the weather, the potential of a blizzard or hurricane, or some rare breed of endangered spider.  (Did I mention that he is 8?)

Then, there is Levi.  At six years old, he is the youngest of the crew.  So, naturally he has to fight for his five minutes of conversation with mom on the way home.  Normally, this is accomplished by everyone talking all at the same time.  Recognizing that they are not achieving anything or that mom only has two ears to hear three kids (plus my phone never fails to ring with a call from Caity at this exact moment) the only natural response is for them ALL to simply talk LOUDER!  Yup… just raise the volume a notch and mom will hear me then, right?

Finally, Levi get’s his 10 seconds of fame in the car and I hear him yelling in the back of the suburban, “Mom!  I have a fan club!”

“What?”  I didn’t quite hear that.

“MOM!  I have a FAN CLUB”

Me:  “Who said that?  Isaac, do you have a man club?  Oh come on!  You’re only eight!”

“No Mom!   It’s Levi!”  By then we are on our lane and the boys have unbuckled from their seatbelts.  Isaac is hanging out of the side door grabbing branches just when Levi pops his head up front between Violet and me.

“No way Levi.  Like you even know what that is!”  replies Violet, as she smacks him in the head.

Bopping back to the back seat, Levi says, “You’re the meanest sister in the whole world!”  Mine is such a peaceful household, I am embarrassed to admit.

“Oh.  Levi!  You have a Fan Club.  Well, isn’t that cool!  A “fan club” in the first grade.”  I respond.  “So, is it like you and Justin Bieber?”  Inside I am thinking,  “Oh no… screaming little girls and Levi wearing his pants down around his butt.  How will we explain this to his daddy?”

“NO!”  By this time, Violet has erupted in to a chorus of “Baby, baby, baby Leeeeeevi!  Baby, baby, baby Leeeeeeeeevi!”  The smacks in the head have been returned.  Levi may be the youngest in the house but you never, and I mean NEVER call him the “b” word.

“Mo-om!”  (How is it they can make a three letter word into two syllables is beyond me!)  “Shut up Violet!”  So much for Levi being proud of this new fan club.

“I have a fan club, mom.  And it is soooo cool!”

“Really?  So, you have fans?!  Can mommy be in your fan club?”

“No.”

Oh, come one!  Now that hurts.  He said “no”.

“NO?!  I can’t?  Why not?  Mommy is your number one fan, don’t you know!”  By this time we have made it to the garage and Levi is rolling those big blue eyes at me.  “No, mom.  It’s a Beyblade Fan Club!  And it is so cool!  At recess, when we play Beyblades, everyone cheers.  They go ‘Levi! Levi! Leeeevi!’  I’m the best Beyblader in the whole school.”

That is so cute!  So next, I ask Levi, “Good for you!  I know how much you like to play Beyblades.  I can just imagine the whole first grade cheering for you Levi.  That’s amazing!”  In my mind, I see all 120 children circled around Levi as he spins his Beyblade into the center.  Children are chanting his name.  Teachers are applauding.  Wait, I think a helicopter with a news camera is approaching.  I add, “My Levi has a fan club.  Way to go buddy!  I bet that feels good to have the whole class cheering you on!”

“It’s not the whole class, mom,” says Levi.  “Really?  Then how many kids are in the Levi Fan Club?”

“Four!”

“But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read,

“‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?” (Matthew 21:15-16 ESV)

Guess Jesus had a fan club too!

Thanks Sandy! I hope you are allowed membership in this most prestegious fan club! LOL! Beyblades are basically modern-day tops! These little spinning things that boys are crazy about. They spin in an “arena” and the last one spinning is the winner.
    That’s the “spin” on Beyblades!
    love, a
