Does God Want You to Work?

Let me begin by saying that I’m so excited about getting to contribute to the Faith and Business 101 column! Right now I’m a work at home mom with multiple streams of legitimate income that greatly help our family out each month. I wasn’t always like this though-in fact just a few years ago I didn’t have any ideas for legitimate kinds of work you could do from home. In the coming weeks I’d like to take you along with me on my journey from there to where I am now!

Ever since I was just a little girl I always knew that I wanted to find my Mr. Right, get married young, have sweet babies young, and stay at home with said Mr. Right and babies. God blessed me with allowing my dreams to come true! I married Mr. Right (Also known as Mr. Elliott)  just before I turned 20 and now at the age of 25 have sweet baby #1 & #2. Mr. Right completely and utterly supported me in my decision to stay at home with our sweet babies but I ended up being very, very sick the entire 9 months while pregnant with sweet baby #1 which forced  me quit working at my full time job much earlier than anticipated. Mr. Right took on a second job to help support our bills and when it no longer worked for him to do so with his military career his parents stepped in and helped out each month. I always felt horrible even though they are the sweetest, kindest people in the world and felt that I should be doing something to help out so we wouldn’t need them to give us money–but what? It was a personal conviction of mine and Mr. Right’s that I would stay at home with our children and they would not be placed in daycare. I had no idea of any way I could possibly bring in money, however, and wasn’t even sure if God wanted me to try to. So before I started looking seriously into anything I prayed and sought God’s will about the whole situation.

I was drawn to Proverbs 31, of course. The “go to” chapter for any Christian woman! As I read it over again I was amazed to realize that in 12 of the verses the virtuous woman is described as working.

Many of those 12 verses are much like verse 24:

She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

In these verses not only is she working, she’s working from home in order to actually bring money in to support her family. Clearly God is not only alright with women working from home–He is showing that it’s the model to be lived up to! Now that I had the “green light” from God I was ready to start looking into options!

Great write-up, Nicole! Can’t wait to hear about the rest of your journey! It sound so much like mine, and the verse you chose is also one of my favorites! I came across that verse when I was thinking about starting my own business w/ making my crafts, and that too helped me make my decision to go for it! God is Great! Congrats! :)
