Michael J. Fox. Muhammad Ali. George Wallace. Vincent Price. Pope John Paul II. Janet Reno. Hummmmm….. What do all these folks have in common? They all have Parkinson’s Disease. And, so does my husband, Dan Hott. Parkinson’s Disease, or “PD”, is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that impairs motor skills. Belonging to a group of movement disorders, PD is a chronic illness for which there is no cure. Symptoms of PD are characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor, a slowing and eventual loss of physical movement. Since this crazy thing called Parkinson’s moved in with us the summer of 2008, this 47-year-old-grey-haired-hott-mama-of-four has had countless conversations with God concerning this topic. So much of my prayer time is centered on trying to understand it all, I sometimes worry that I might be giving God a headache. Do you know what I mean? Sometimes, I feel like a pest. You know? Like when your children ask over and over for something. … [Read more...]
Love Thy Neighbor
Really? Do I have to? Oh, come on God! This commandment is so hard. Surely, you don’t mean it, do You? “Love my neighbor!” Well, if you could see my neighbor, maybe You would understand. You see, this now 47-year-old-grey-haired-Hott-mama-of-four (yes, I had a birthday), feels a little like we are living next to the Hatfields and the McCoy’s. This IS West Virginia, by the way. But, the last time I looked, this is also the year 2012! Isn’t it?! So, why is it that we happen to border property with some of the most unusual folks around? For someone such as myself that just loves to play the host, cook for crowds, and entertain on a regular basis, it seems that no matter how I attempt to express “love” to those on the neighboring 95 acres here next to us on Hott Mountain, I am met with comments like; “STAY OFF MY LAND!” and “I HAVE TO PROTECT MY PROPERTY!” From me? I just thought it would be fun to have a cup of coffee with you after you walked a half mile through the … [Read more...]
From Sizzling Hott Summertime to a TYPD
Well, I did it! Yesterday, I managed to finish, yes finish all three controversial books in the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. (I’ll tell you all about “that” later…) But guess what else I did yesterday!? This is really hard to believe;… especially from this not-so-athletic-hott-grey-haired mama of four. I biked 25 miles! Yes! You heard me right! 25 MILES! And, we have five other witnesses and the cell phone photos to prove it! I still can’t believe it. Dan took us all to the canal in Hancock, MD, to ride bikes on the Western Maryland Rail Trail. On a beautiful summer day, we began our journey west with the mission to go 10 miles and return! Cycling along with Violet, her friend Katheryn, Dan, Isaac, and Levi, we traveled all the way to the end! We were all so hyped and excited, our curiosity lead us an extra few miles just to see what the end of the trail looked like. Seeing a deer, squirrel, and a few chipmunks along the way, the picture perfect day was not … [Read more...]
