I've been reading Christian fiction and nonfiction a long time... Honestly, I read my way through life. But most of my friends don't. Especially my friends with kids. It's hard to find that time to unwind. But I manage to make time to read. I won't go into my opinions on TV, but let's just say in our house the rule is that we try not to watch a TV show or movie that demonstrates or supports a lifestyle that goes against the calling we have received in Christ. Writing it out sounds so religious I want to vomit, but I get negatively influenced super easily, so I have to know my own limits. That rule really narrows our viewing options, but I have found it to give our minds new wings to soar past a bunch of crap the world throws our way. I've got one mind to fill. 5 Tips to Help Your Child Read
I am a homeschooling mother of two, and it was a very different process to help each child read. My first child was an amazingly fast learner and was reading chapter books by the age of 4! Today, she is 20 and still an avid reader. My second child is the complete opposite. While she loves to read, learning does not come as easy for her, and reading had a bit of a slow start. She has to strive and work hard to make good grades that were so easy for my oldest. When it came to teaching my youngest to read, it was so hard to keep my perspective and not blame myself for her slow start. However, I never gave up, and today, my sweet third grader has improved by leaps and bounds and is reading chapter books. She still has some room for improvement that will come with our diligent pursuit of good reading skills. Why Reading Aloud to Kids Is So Important
Are you concerned that you are going to come across as "one of those pushy parents" if you read to your children early? Do you fear boredom or criticism from your older kids if you read to them? It might be a good idea to get past those fears - reading aloud to your kids is said to have many benefits. Experts speculate that illiteracy could be greatly reduced if not eliminated if parents would read three or more stories a day to their children. Children who are read to not only tend to be early, proficient readers themselves, but they also tend to have a better grasp on language in general.
