But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; - Matthew 5:44 This is one of those Bible verses that you are probably all too familiar with if you're a Christian or grew up in church. It is definitely one of the very hardest to actually live out though! Many times figuring out how to change a Bible verse from something that sounds great on paper into something that is actually liveable is extremely hard to do. And this is one of those tricky verses--Jesus taught it and lived it-but he also spoke the truth without mincing it--especially to people like the scribes and pharisees. Lately I've been pondering this verse and wondering what it looks like in today's world. As we were studying this passage for my Bible study I had a situation happen that I felt portrayed it pretty well. As you might know I live in Boston, MA and the driving up here is crazy. Hiding behind the post
The warm days of spring are finally coming here in the greater Boston area. Everyone is emerging from their winter domains and enjoying the cool breeze, the warm sun, and the fresh smell. Children especially seem to relish being able to go "free" after being cooped up for so long. The other day I saw one such little boy dawdling along. In his hands he was holding several of the snow sticks that are scattered around our apartment complex. That is, until he looked up and saw me watching him from my car. He instantly froze, his eyes got big and round, and he slowly took his hand off the stick and then proceeded to walk behind the apartment post and "hide" from me. I just had to laugh as I could still see half … [Read more...]
Seeking Wisdom
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. - James 1:5 One of the main things that I have been praying about this year on my path towards a balanced life is for wisdom. How do I discern how my time should be spent? Since I reached the point of realizing my plate is too full, how do I determine what is "good" and what is "great"? How can I become a better wife, better mom, better Christian--things which are difficult and perplexing matters at times. All of these require a great amount of wisdom... something that I'm willing to admit that I don't have! In the circles in which I run I'm often referred to as "the baby". As I got married and had children young (for this day) many of my good friends these days are anywhere from 5 to 10 years older than I am. It's easy to feel the difference, especially if I am depending on myself for wisdom in all the areas of my life. The great thing is that I don't … [Read more...]
