Proper Communication is the Key to Healthy Relationships

Proper communication is one of the most important parts of a healthy relationship. It is important to be honest when we are communicating with others. It does not matter what type of relationship it is…friend, spouse, coworker…proper communication is and important key to all being well in any relationship. Good, honest, healthy communication builds trust in any relationship.

Listening is another important part of proper communication. It tells the other person that they are important to you. Listening is a vital ingredient to a healthy relationship.

Many Mothers, like myself, are multi-taskers. This can be a problem when communicating. We are not really listening if our eyes are on our task and not on the person speaking to us. Eye contact is important. When we give the person speaking to us eye contact, we are forcing ourselves to listen to what they are saying. So, look people in the eye, pay attention, and respond at the appropriate times during the conversation. When these concepts are applied, we should be well on our way to better communication and listening.

Communicating properly needs to be an important focus in in our parenting. Our children need us to communicate with them properly. Would we yell at a friend? Pastor? Boss? I do not think so… Why then, do we seem to be comfortable yelling at our children? They deserve healthy communication and eye contact from us, just like the rest of the world we communicate with on a regular basis!

I believe that is we are more gentle and considerate in our communication, we will have better relationships with our children, husbands and friends.

Solomon understood the power of proper communication…

A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare. – Proverbs 15:1

Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body. – Proverbs 16:24

There are many more Scriptures that encourage us to speak kindly and use proper communication skills with others. I challenge you to do your own study and put it to practice in your parenting!

God Bless!
