The Sermon on the Mount – Called to be a Light in the Darkness, Part 2
<–back to The Sermon on the Mount
Matthew 5:14-16
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven.
We will start with the original Greek meanings for two words…
Shine – lampo (lam’-po): to beam, radiate brilliancy, give light.
Good – kalos (kal-os’): beautiful, good, valuable, virtuous, better, honest, worthy.
...A city on a hill cannot be hidden
Good or bad, what we do is seen by the world. The world is watching. The lost are waiting for our lights to shine and for us to live what we believe. When they see us do the same wrongs that they do, they are drawn away from the Truth. We must not say one thing and do another. We must live our lives for Jesus and die to self…EVERY day! Not just on church days!
When we let “our lights shine,” we radiate His Love for the world to see, and the lost can be found. We are just like lighthouses. Before sonar, there were lighthouses. And they would shine brightly for the ships that were out in the darkness of the ocean. Their light would guide the ships away from the dangers they couldn’t see. That is exactly what we are to be for this lost world. We are to be shining lights in the vast darkness of this sin filled world. Our lights will lead the lost to Christ and steer them away from the eternity of hell.
When we walk the walk (do good deeds) and not just talk the talk we will be credible witnesses for the Salvation of Jesus Christ. However, when we live the opposite of what we “say” that we believe, then we are leading the lost deeper into the darkness. We are setting a poor example for the One Who loved us enough to suffer and die for our wrongs.
He deserves MUCH better then that. We were bought with a VERY high price and we owe our lives to our Beloved Savior.
Let’s Pray,
Daddy God, Thank You for Your Truth. Help me to light the way, so that the lost will find their way to You. Help me to be a better witness through the life I live. Help me to shine for Jesus. Thank You. In Jesus Mighty Name, Amen.
In His Love and Service,
Lara ;)
