Fun on the Road with Kids

Sometimes life gets so busy we cannot even squeeze in extra time to spend doing something fun with the kids. There IS a solution! Fun on the Road! Car games and activities that you can do with your kids while you are driving, or on a family road trip!

Fun on the Road with Kids: 8 Fun Car Games

Note: This list is specifically for SPENDING time WITH your kids. NOT to keep THEM busy!

Sing Songs. Sing praises to the Lord. Sing preschool songs. Sing funny songs. Sing. You will laugh and have a blast!

ABC’s. You look around as you drive and try to find a-z IN order of alphabet. First person to z wins. You will see the letter on license plates, signs, buildings, etc.

License Plate Game. See who can find the most states. The kids will need to be able to write…or at least keep count.

I Spy. Take turns guessing what the other is seeing. For instance. Moms turn; “I spy with my little eye something red.” The child(ren) guess. You may be thinking about sign, car, whatever. Try to keep it easy for the littler ones.

Find the Vehicle. Everyone tries to find preselected vehicles. (Example: Fire Engine, Garbage truck, red sports car, cop car, ambulance, etc.) at the end of the trip the person who has seen the most vehicles wins. You can count the vehicles more than once if you see them more than once. An older child can keep score…or Dad!

Luv Bug. Look for Volkswagen Beetles. When you see one, yell “Luv Bug.” Keep track and the first person who spots 10 wins.

Who Has the Best Memory. (This is better for older children) One person starts by identifying something they see while you are driving. Mom may need to get it started. The next person repeats that word and adds one they see. It keeps going with each person repeating all the words and adding one. If you get a word out of order you are out of the game.

I Love You More Than. This is one that I made up myself. :) This is easy and LOVING! Take turns telling each other you love more than something you see while driving. For example, one of you might say, I love you more than pizza pie if you see a pizza place. Or, I love you more than red trucks. You get it.

Have fun on the road with kids and enjoy your children. Moms, we only get them for a little while. Do not let the busyness of life rob you of these precious moments!

One game that my friend introduced me to (her and her family came up with it) that I like playing on long car rides….You have everyone list one animal, but it cannot be repeated. For example: If it is my turn and I say “dolphin”, it is added to the list (or mental list to try to help memory) and cannot be repeated by anyone else. It’s cool learning some new animal names and sometimes can get silly/funny (I said “Seagull” once and my friend replied with “Bay-gull”{bagel}). We’ve also altered this to be for “Name Different Candies” “Name Different Places”, etc.)

Hi! Some great ideas! We love reciting nursery rhymes in the car. I’ll say the first line with the last word missing and my 2.5 year old son will fill in the blank so to speak! Lots of fun!
