Mom Alert: Are You Aware of these 10 Dangerous Household Items?

Many products we use personally and in our homes are loaded with harmful chemicals that pose dangerous outcomes in our health and the health of our children. Being aware of and avoiding these harmful products is a good start to reduce and remove toxins from your home. Make sure that you always, always, ALWAYS read labels, and if you do not know what the chemical is, look it up!

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. – Hosea 4:6

10 Dangerous Household Items

1. Antiperspirant/deodorant contains aluminum (a metal) that blocks sweat from being released from the pores. Alternative health studies have linked aluminum as a cause for developing breast cancer, prostate cancer and Alzheimer’s. Another harmful ingredient found in antiperspirant/deodorant is paraben. This is a synthetic preservative found in many body care products. These harmful ingredients are easily absorbed by the skin and it can cause early puberty in children, birth defects and organ toxicity.

Triclosan is another ingredient that combats odor, but it is better known as a pesticide according to the FDA.

2. Mouthwashes main ingredient is alcohol and it increases your risk of developing oral cancers. Some brands of mouthwash and toothpaste have the active ingredient triclosan and daily use of this product accumulates in the body that will cause long term unhealthy effects.

3. Cosmetics, unless they are made with all natural and organic ingredients, harbor the most chemicals. How many ingredients can you pronounce without having to break down the word? The skin being the largest and porous organ absorbs these dangerous substances which travel into the bloodstream.

There is too many to list, but some of these chemical compounds are formaldehyde, petroleum, triclosan, lead, synthetic colors (coal tar), parabens, and so forth. Don’t be fooled; these ingredients also show up in baby care products.

4. Other Skin Care Items. Just like cosmetics body lotions, hand sanitizers, sunscreens and such contain toxins that are absorbed via the skin, carried into the bloodstream and then accumulates in the liver, colon and fat cells.

5. Cleaning Items. Although you don’t apply household cleaning supplies to your skin, unless you come in contact, you inhale the fumes. Some cleaning products smell great, but you shouldn’t go around sniffing it or inhaling it. You shouldn’t mix cleaning products together as it can cause extreme toxic vapors that cause lead poisoning. Some dangerous products to be aware of: toilet bowl cleaners and deodorizers, Ajax, window cleaners, all-purpose floor cleaners, bleach, oven cleaners, tile and tub cleaners etc.

6. Bottled Water. Bottled water isn’t safer than tap water because bisphenol A is found in many bottled water. A good filtering system for your tap water is the best bet to get clean drinking water. Other plastics such as food containers also contain BPA.

7. Cans. Aluminum cans have a resin lining that leaches BPA into the foods such as soups, vegetables, fruits, and juices.

8. Air fresheners. They have great scents and mask odors, but it’s all chemicals that cause cancer and respiratory illnesses.

9. Teflon or non-stick cookware. They should not be used as the coating on the pan or pot is leached into the foods you’re cooking. You can purchase a healthier dispensing product, like a bottle that you add oil to, and pump spray it to avoid chemicals and aerosol. It works just as well, and is healthier!

10. Real labels. Lead is found in many products and around your home including old paint, water, and children’s toys.

It may seem daunting at first glance, however, if we are not proactive in making sure our families are safe, we are helping add to the problem. When we use our powerful shopping voice and stop buying items with harmful chemicals in them, manufacturers will begin to listen as they feel the financial pinch!
