Summer Makeup Picks that Beat the Heat

So, I grew up loving makeup. In the 80’s, I’d smear mom’s orange lipstick all over my lips, and rub on some green eye shadow as often as I could sneak into her supply. (Right now she’d be arguing that her lipstick was not orange, it was apricot!) Regardless, I never really wavered from my makeup obsession. But I’m not a snob about it. I have to be realistic with my money, and I can’t go buying all the fancy items I’d like to have. Thanks to Ulta, I can pretty much get my entire face made over for less than $50.

Summertime is no different; I still love makeup, but I get to be less aggressive. In the winter I’m piling it on to cover up the ghoulish gray pallor my skin so often turns from months of staying indoors. But come spring and summer, I’m layering on sunscreen and racing out the door. I’ve compiled a list of some summer makeup that I consider lightweight (both on your wallet and your skin) choices that can take you to outdoor barbecues, poolside rendezvous, or a night on the town. (Who am I kidding? What I really mean is grocery shopping and coffee runs in between watching the kids fight over toys in the kiddie pool in our backyard… But I like to at least pretend I’m glamorous.)

1. Maybelline Volum’ Express Colossal Waterproof Mascara in Classic Black: If I ever were stranded on a desert island, I hope I would have a lifetime supply of waterproof mascara. And no, not just any mascara. This one. So five years ago I got married, and one of my bridesmaids let me borrow her waterproof mascara. (Yes, I know that means I was taking a risk of getting a stye in my eye on my honeymoon, but it was either that or risk being a raccoon by the end of the ceremony. Tears were inevitable, the risk was taken.) It is also very affordable at $6.99 a tube… And so very lovely. And yes! Buy black mascara, brown makes people’s lashes blend in too much, black causes them to stand out. Buy black.

2. Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Color Balm in Woppin’ Watermelon by Clinique: No, I don’t normally buy Clinique. Yes, this particular choice is almost double the cost of the mascara aforementioned. BUT! Who can resist the name? Don’t you want a chubby stick? And I can assure you, these little guys get the job done. A little hint of color, some serious moisture, and an adorable name. I love them. You will love them. And they have a summer makeup line, which is just TOO much fun.

3. Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector B.B. Cream: Are you confused by the new alphabet creams? BB, CC? I once heard mention of a DD cream. What to do with all of the letters? Try them out, of course! I really love mine. It covers without making my skin feel clogged, and it illuminates as well. One of my good friends showed up to church one day with glowing skin, and when I asked her what she had done, she told me this little cream was her secret. BB Creams are a little bit more coverage than a tinted moisturizer, and they offer SPF. Which is a must-have summer makeup. Try it out!

Three simple little summer makeup items that you can throw in your pool bag or your purse and feel confident in. Nobody wants a full face of makeup in the summer time, and nobody should feel like they have to wear one. Similarly, just because you’re going to swim doesn’t mean you have to go face-naked. Unless, of course, that’s your thing. Have at it, if so. For me, I like a few trusty pals to bear the heat with me, and I hope you enjoy these three as well.
