Where Were You When You Realized “I’M PREGNANT!”?

Pacing the bathroom floor, the longest three minutes of my life have been spent waiting for the little pink plus sign to appear.  You?  What will it be?  Negative… again!  Or, wait….  it’s positive!  We’re pregnant!  How many times have you watched the clock tick the seconds away to reveal the outcome of a pregnancy test?  For both moms and dads:  Where were you and what was going on when you got the blessed, the once in a lifetime, the “from now on my life will never be the same” news:  “I’m pregnant!”?

I was thinking about this last night as Levi was sleeping with his seven year old toes under my ribs.  Do you remember the moment you got the “good news”?  Do you recall what was happening when you got the confirmation that God was sending you a little person?  Maybe it was those toes digging their way to my spine like before Levi was born, but I was up around 2:30 a.m. going through the next days schedule, when I remembered a post I recently saw on Facebook.

Well, the post actually had nothing to do with my question for you.  LOL!  That just goes to show you how my grey haired mama brain works.  But, the post asked this:

“When I think about Chick-Fil-A, I _________________!”

Right!  So, what does chicken and pickle sandwiches have to do with getting the “I’m pregnant!” news?  Cravings maybe?  No.  Not at all.  It was at Chick-Fil-A in Hagerstown, MD, where I met my hott-hubby for lunch just before he was leaving on a business trip when the phone rang… It was the lab.  We were pregnant with Isaac!

Then, he flew to Atlanta!

Hmmm…  I realized that I can remember each and every occasion when I got the earth changing news.  Something I never really thought about.  How about I tell about the moments I learned that I was pregnant and you tell me yours!  Dad’s too!  Okay?  Here we go:

At the risk of sounding like a bubble head, I was completely clueless when I was pregnant with Caity, so much that, when I got the news, I was at my gynecologist in Chicago for just an annual exam.  Yes. You got it right.  While on the table, preparing for a pap, feet in the stirrups and all, the doc looks “down there” and says “I think you may be pregnant!”

“What?!….  Are you kidding me?  How did that happen?”  Yes.  Ashamed to say,  I actually asked her this.  (Duh… right?)  I really thought she got a glimpse of Caity… like maybe she could see a baby through there, or something.  C.R.A.Z.Y!

“Let’s just do a little test and see,” was her response.  Sure enough!  I was 24 and pregnant for the first time!

Next, wind the clock up ten years and I can tell you exactly what was going on when I was pregnant with Violet.  You see, by now Dan and I were married and trying to conceive.  (Yes, a second marriage, in case you’re wondering.)  After about five years of “practice”,… unsuccessfully,… we found ourselves at one of those fertility places.  We went through basil body temps, ovulation kits, to injections.  A specialist told Dan that he would never father a baby.

So, Violet was a “science” baby via a relatively new process called ICSI, or intracytoplasmic sperm injection.  But, we like to call Violet our “American Express” baby because we charged her on the credit card!  LOL!  Twelve eggs and 9 embryos later, we had a beautiful, baby girl!  We could literally see on the monitor the moment Violet was conceived!

Through this experience, we learned from some fancy doctors that if we wanted to make more babies, it would never happen.  Apparently, some “accident” Dan encountered with radiation in the ‘70’s may have been the explanation for our situation.  So, we settled in with our family of four and believed to be finished!

But God had a different plan!  He sent us on a trip to the Florida Keys, and low.and.behold…. in 2003, there we were in the Chick-fil-a with the news:  “I’m Pregnant!”

When Isaac was about six months old, we took another family vacation to Florida.  We even took Aunt Tammy along to keep us busy.  But guess what happened?  Nine months later and our biggest baby yet:  L.E.V.I.

I couldn’t believe it!  Needless to say, we didn’t go back to Florida for a few years.  LOL!  But with the all too familiar physical signs, when I realized that I was pregnant with Levi, I just knew.  Do you know what I mean?

On each occasion, the realization that we were pregnant was each special in its own way.  I realize that not all moms find themselves pregnant under positive circumstances, and my heart goes out to those moms having to deal with pregnancy in what can be a cruel world.  I guess it’s how we try to make any of life’s events good news, right?

So, with Mother’s Day coming up, share those stories when you received your “good news” with me, a friend, your family.  Recall the moment.  If your children are adults, tell them about how the second you discovered they were living and growing inside you, you knew God had blessed you with something special:  motherhood.

I am reminded how blessed I am to have these amazing children from God.  Kinda like another mom we all know about…  her “good news” is recorded in a pretty special place:

“Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.”  – Luke 1:30-32

My news wasn’t brought by Gabriel, but boy did it ever change my life too.

Ok…..I was home watching the Andy Griffith Show waiting for the three minutes to pass. I got the digital kind because I wanted to be SURE. I went in there and saw the word “pregnant” and began to cry! At the time, I worked at none other than Chick-fil-a! I love that place, but I didn’t at the time! My morning sickness was horrible. So, with the other two, I just knew before the test, cause I would get queasy at the smell or sight of fried chicken! LOL! Even so, Chick-fil-a is one of my all time faves, just not when I’m expecting!

Hi Gingie! Isn’t that funny that you also have a Chick-fil-a connection with your pregnancy!?! Thank you for sharing your story with me! I also love to go there, with the whole family; in fact, it is our ‘regular’ stop before Violet’s track meets this season. Since we live in a remote area, we only get a chance to stop whenever we are in a “big city” LOL!
Hoping your Mother’s Day is happy!
    love, a
