Fun Fall Activities for the Whole Family
It is with great joy that I’m anticipating the arrival of fall. After an unseasonably hot and humid summer the cool breezes will be a welcomed gift from Mother Nature. I’ve already begun my fall decorating and pulled out the scarecrows, warm blankets, cozy pillows, and pumpkin scented candles. There are so many fun activities to enjoy during the autumn season that are cheap and fun.
Ideas for your family to get the most out of those cozy fall days
Visit a Farm
I was never much of a farm girl, but after having Anya it has become one of my favorite activities during any time of the year, but especially in the fall. Many local farms have pumpkin picking, hayrides, and fall festivals during the months of September and October. Pumpkin picking is a great way to spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Pack a picnic lunch, get a wagon and go pumpkin and apple picking. Kids will enjoy running through the pumpkin patch and cuddling up on the hayride. Afterward, have a pumpkin carving party and make apple pie. Yum!
Collect Foliage for Crafts
Fall brings about beautiful changes in nature and what better way to capture those images than collecting them? Go out on a crisp fall day in your yard, park, or local woods bring a basket and collect leaves. Your kids will love all the beautiful multi- colored leaves. Then let them arrange the leaves in an inexpensive picture frame. Decorate the frames and hang them in your kitchen or family room. This is a cheap way to create beautiful art that brings the outdoors inside. Another simple way to bring fall inside is collect acorns and place them in small decorative bowls inside your home.
Ride Horses
Riding horses along a trail is a fantastic way to enjoy the changes in nature. Call a local stable and make it a family activity. Most stables have ponies, so if you have little ones they won’t be left out on all the fun. Gather some other families together and check on group rates for a day.
Have a Campfire
Nothing beats a cozy campfire on a cool autumn evening. Build a campfire in your own backyard. Call some friends, pull out the sweatshirts and blankets, get the ingredients for the Smore’s and have an old fashioned campfire and make some memories!
Bake Some Fall Treats
I love the aroma of homemade booked goods in my home. Go online and find some recipes that are sure to warm your home and your tummy! Pumpkin muffins and bread, warm apple cider, apple and pumpkin pie are just a few treats that scream fall. Spend a lazy weekend afternoon baking with the kids. Bring the season of thanksgiving in by sharing your goodies with neighbors, friends, relatives, or give your kid’s classroom a treat by making extra pastries and putting them in a pretty basket.
Enjoy the Outdoors
This season I plan on enjoying the outdoors. The summer heat was unbearable even in the evening, so I look forward to spending more time outdoors. Stay healthy and in shape by taking evening walks, morning hikes, canoeing, riding bikes, and playing in the cool autumn air. Don’t forget to take pictures!
Take a Long Scenic Ride
I love a road trip! Just because summer is winding down doesn’t mean you can’t take a road trip. Research the scenic routes in your area that are typically beautiful this time of the year. Wake up early in the morning, pack up the kids in the car, stop at a diner for breakfast and take the scenic route. God created so much beauty and what better way to enjoy it than with your family. It gives your children an appreciation for the beauty of nature.
Whatever you do have fun! Bring the warmth of fall into your home and your hearts. For decorating tips check out an article I wrote last year on fall decorating. Take some time to enjoy your surroundings and your family. Happy fall!
