The Daily – Little Red Hen

One of my all time favorite books is the Little Red Hen. I read it to my kids all the time. I have a favorite version too (by: Merrigold Press and illustrated by Amye Rosenberg). Anyway, her most memorable line is, “Then I will do it Myself!”

Hmmm…

How may times do we try to go it alone? How often do we get that Little Red Hen mindset and think that WE can do it alone and that we don’t need anyone–including God? If you are anything like me–far too often!

God does not want us to go it alone.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30 (NLT)

He TELLS us in His Word to give our worries and troubles to Him. He advises us to seek Him and when we do He WILL guide us. We just don’t listen! Only He knows why we are daft enough to choose the yoke of this world over His!

Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; reverently fear and worship the Lord and turn [entirely] away from evil. It shall be health to your nerves and sinews, and marrow and moistening to your bones. – Proverbs 3:5-8 (amplified)

The Little Red Hen did not understand that even though she had encountered lazy and rude “friends”, God was there with her and would help her walk through her trial and comfort her in her hard labor. She should not have given a second thought to what others were or were not doing. She needed to focus on God in the midst of her task. Sure, it was not easy, and she DID need some help. However, our help will not always come from others. As mentioned in the Scriptures above, we need to rely on God–in all things.

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. – Colossians 3:23-24 (NLT)

On the flip side, we need to be aware of those around us. We need to take the time to SEE the Little Red Hens around us–pray for them, help them, and encourage them. We all need a friend, shoulder and help from time to time. We all need encouragement and love. As Christians, we should be looking for opportunities to love our sisters and brothers in Christ. :)

My prayer;

Daddy God, help me to see when I am being a Little Red Hen. Help me to recognize when I am choosing to go it alone and not rely on You. Give me strength to seek Your help and the help of those around me. Help me to have a right attitude when help does not readily come from others. And, Lord, help me to see when a sister is in need of assistance. Help me to pray for others and be sensitive. In Jesus Mighty Name, Amen.
