How to Have a Fruitful Business

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. - Gal 5:22-23 NIV

In order to have a fruitful business you need to have a fruit filled one! As Christians we are not only responsible to our jobs and ourselves in our conduct—but to God as well! Because of this everyone, especially non believers, pay very close attention to our attitudes and actions, especially when it comes to business! Are you exemplifying the above qualities on a day to day basis in your life and job?

This week and next we’ll be discussing each of them and how you should be incorporating them as a part of your business.

Love – Do you love your job, your employees, your co-workers, your clients? If your answer is no then why don’t you? Love is listed first and is should be such a huge part of the Christian life. If you have a genuine concern for everyone you come in contact with it will make the rest of this list—and your life—so much easier!

Joy – I’ve often heard that joy is not based on circumstances or feelings (that’s happiness) but a continual attitude that each Christian should have. Do you have joy? Is your joy spilling over to your business? Would your colleagues describe you as a joyful person? With everything that Christ has done for us we should be continually joyful!

Peace – Are you at peace in the job you’re doing or the business you’re running? Do you feel that it is God’s will for your life, that it is what He is calling you to be doing at this moment? You are never going to be successful if you are continually second guessing yourself-or even worse going against what you know you should be doing or continuing in something you should not be.

Kindness – These days in many businesses it’s a cutthroat corporate ladder all the way to the top and the only way to get ahead is to trample all over your competitors. What I love about the Christian (& sometimes even secular) small business community is I constantly see businesses—even ones that sell the same types of products or services—continually helping out each other, talking about and promoting each other, and just being an encouragement to each other. Kindness—not only is a fruit of the spirit but “what goes around comes around” and even though it might seem strange to others, promoting other businesses and even competitors will gain you a more loyal client base yourself!

Try implementing each of these 4 fruits into your business and watch how much God will bless you and how much your business will grow!

Seeking Wisdom

Proverbs 3:13-15 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.

Any time anyone starts a business or begins a new job they want to succeed. No one ever begins looking to fail or be fired. One of the best ways to succeed in business, and every area of life, is to have wisdom. It’s prudent to get training and advice for any job you’re in or any business you run. There are many online sites that offer valuable articles and advice for many different aspects of your job or business. Books are always a wonderful resource as well! If you head to the library you’ll find huge amounts of books from people who have been there, done that, and succeeded. All of these areas are ones you should be utilizing and gathering wisdom from.

As Christians, however, any other way of seeking wisdom should come after we go to the true source of wisdom—God! James 1:5 tells us that all we have to do to receive wisdom is to ask God for it! Any time you have a major business decision, the first things you should be doing are hitting your knees and grabbing your Bible. God says He’ll give us wisdom if we ask for it—but we also need to realize that he’s already given us a huge book that is just filled with wisdom, including wisdom for business decisions! The Bible has much to say about how we are to act in business, what kind of people we should and should not be in business with, and what good opportunities look like. Wisdom is not just important for huge decisions, though. We also desperately need wisdom in the day to day areas of our life as well. The Bible covers everything from “the big stuff” to every day life. Proverbs 31 is filled with many verses that show how the Christian business woman should be running her business and home on a daily basis.

What is sad is that I know that many times I think of prayer and Bible reading as almost an afterthought when it comes to seeking out wisdom for how to run my business or how to apply it to my job–especially on a daily basis. I’m afraid that it’s this way for many other Christians as well. We get so busy and caught up in things that what should be our first resource becomes our last resort. My challenge to myself, and to you, is to seek out the wisdom that only comes from above and apply it to your business! The results are sure to be amazing!

It’s Not About Us!

Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. - Psalm 115:1 niv

Let’s take a minute and reflect on this verse. How does it apply to your business? Are you working so hard just to get ahead, to help yourself and your own family? If so…I encourage you to re-think that. There’s nothing wrong with hard work to help out your family. The Bible encourages that! The Proverbs 31 woman works night and day to help provide for her family. But in verse 20 it also says that “she opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.”

Are you inward focused or outward focused? Is every cent you make going to pay off your own debts or going into the family pot…or are you giving some away, too?

I ask you to pray and seek the Lord about that this week. I have learned that when my goals and dreams are more outward focused, God does amazing things! When I’m focused on my self, there’s no room for the work of God in my life.

Dream Big!

If your goal is to climb the latter of success on your own…you’re not going to get very far and will most likely fall. If your goal is to help others reach their full potential, everyone gets a lift!

Paying off debt is GREAT! But while you’re doing that, expand your vision! Take a little out and give it away to someone in need.

Getting a promotion is GREAT! But while you’re at it, how can you use your influence to help a colleague reach their goals, too?

Bless someone else and you will be blessed.

Back to the verse at the beginning: It’s not about US! It’s all about the love and faithfulness of God. It’s about loving others as Jesus does.

In life.

In business.

Until next time…

Do’s and Don’ts For Marketing Your Online Business

Five Things To Do When Marketing Your Online Business

  1. Set up a Facebook account and use it to connect with friends, clients and potential clients. Be personable. Be Real. Comment on friends’ posts.
  2. Join Facebook groups and fan pages that you are actually interested in. Make new friends inside those groups by responding to their comments and making a new connection.
  3. Set up a Facebook fan page for your business and invite your friends to come and “like” your page.
  4. Set up a Twitter account and follow friends and potential clients. Use www.wefollow.com to find likeable people to follow. Tweet about interesting things. Read other people’s tweets and respond.
  5. Create a blog and write valuable, informative posts; posting something new at least once a week Link to your blog posts on Facebook and Twitter.

Five Things NOT To Do When Marketing Your Online Business:

  1. Don’t friend request a ton of people on Facebook that you do not know or try to add the friends that a mutual friend has. It’s annoying to people and you’ll also get flagged for spam.
  2. Don’t join every group and fan page that you can find, and don’t start friend requesting everyone inside of those groups or fan pages.
  3. Don’t invite the same people over and over again to “like” your fan page and don’t send a million messages asking friends to help you get more fans! One request is enough. If several months go by and a friend hasn’t “liked” your page, consider sending them one—just one– reminder message.
  4. Don’t sign up for “automatic followers.” This will just get you a ton of questionable and adult-type followers and lots and lots of spam!
  5. Don’t post on your blog once every month or two and expect a loyal following. Don’t fill up your blog with lots of buttons and ads. This will make your blog look cluttered and unappealing.

All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. – Proverbs 14:23

Picking Your Team Successfully

As a mother and a small business owner, you will probably have people working closely with and for you in the coming years. While you may not be able to afford a full time assistant or hire any permanent staff, chances are you make choices on a daily basis about who you choose to do business with: the print shop, graphic designer, web host, web designer, etc.

When I was first starting out in business, I couldn’t afford much help at all. I was doing all of those things myself. But as my business grew, I needed to start selecting a team of people to work closely with. To date I have an assistant, a marketing consultant and 10 event coordinators that work for me. The people you choose to work closest with will either make or break you. I have made some mistakes selecting team members in the past and sometimes you have to learn the hard way. I cannot stress this enough so I’ll say it again: The people you choose to work closest with will either make or break you.

Here is an excerpt from John Maxwell’s Leadership promises for everyday:

Red Auerbach, long-time president of the Boston Celtics, said, “How you select people is more important than how you manage them once they’re on the job. If you start with the right people, you won’t have problems later on.”

I want people close to me to…

Know my heart
Be loyal to me
Be trustworthy
Be discerning
Have a servant’s heart
Be a good thinker
Be able to follow through
Have a great heart for God

This excerpt was originally taken from the book “Developing the Leaders Around You” by John Maxwell, which I highly recommend. Maxwell goes on to describe each characteristic of the people He chooses to be closest to him. It’s wonderful advice and I hope you’ll get a chance to pick it up if you are working with a team in any way.

I encourage you to think ahead. If you are earnestly plugging away at your business, then there is a great chance you’ll be hiring people to join your team in the future. I can tell you from personal experience that it is no fun at all to have to ask someone to step down from your team. So take my advice: pick your team wisely and prayerfully!

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6

Until next time…

The Summer Slump – Part 2: Ideas To Boost Business in the Summer

Kids are everywhere. Customers are nowhere.

What’s a business owner to do to keep making ends meet over the summer and please the family at the same time?

Planning for these summer slumps and using them to your advantage can change the way your business –and family—runs over the summer.

Here are some ideas:

1. Contact local churches and Christian radio stations. Find out about upcoming summer events that are of interest to your family. Consider sponsoring several of them or offering free food, products or services in exchange for setting up a table at the event or passing out business fliers. Your kids will enjoy helping out, too.

2. Get your kids involved in what you do. From the youngest to the oldest, there is usually some kind of job that each child can do to help. My 3 year old can even help me put stamps on my envelopes! Motivate them in several ways: “Mommy will be done for the day a lot faster if you help and then we can do something fun!” or you can always pay them for their time or reward them in other ways. Older kids can do more chores around the house and yard in exchange for fun day trips to the movies, water parks, etc.

3. Hold a contest for your clients and a contest for your kids.

For the clients: Come up with some kind of contest for past and present clients. Maybe send out a newsletter with a trivia question on it and the first 5 clients to respond receive starbucks cards. You could also hold a referral contest and offer a more expensive prize for the winner. Send out a mailer that asks for referrals. For each referral that becomes a client, the referrer will get 1 entry. A high dollar prize will get you a lot of numbers!

For the kids: while running your client contest, get your kids in on the action, too. The kids’ contest could be about chores, athletics, etc. On the day you pick your winning client, pick a winning child, too. Take that child on a special “ice cream date” and have them help you deliver the client prize.

4. Make sure to thank all of your clients! Consider hosting a barbecue and giving away door prizes. A simple hand-written thank you note always works, too, especially with tight budgets. A thank you card goes a long way and helps get your clients thinking about you and your business again.

5. During the really slow times, take advantage of the quiet! Work on taxes and marketing. I have made the mistake many times of waiting until the last minute to do taxes when business is always really busy during that time of year. Get caught up on paperwork and bookkeeping and take time to develop your fall marketing plan and budget. Then you don’t have to worry about it during the busier times of the year.

6. Create your client wish list. I’ve used this idea a few times in the past, but if you haven’t done so already, do some research and make a list of the clients you wish you had. Create “gifts” of some sort with your business info, samples and/or coupons and deliver them to your dream clients. Have the kids help deliver the gifts and make sure to follow up with these potential clients in a few weeks.

Refuse good advice and watch your plans fail;
take good counsel and watch them succeed.
Proverbs 15:22

Until next time…

Faith and Business 101: The Summer Slump

Businesses suffer through it, Churches fear it, Parents plan for it.

What is it?

The summer Slump!

What do smart parents, churches and business owners do to prepare for this regular slump in routine? They plan fun events to keep everyone coming back for more!

When kids say “I’m Bored!” Mom has a plan!

When the attendance is low, the church has a plan!

When business is slow, YOU need a plan!

I have been on staff at a church, I am a parent, and I’ve worked for, and now am, a business owner. I’ve been in the creative planning stages of each of these life phases and have helped plan summer ministry events and ideas to get people back in the doors over the summer, I’ve written and compiled a book called “199 Fun Family Activities” to help bust the kids summer boredom blues, and I’ve helped plan events to keep customers happy over the summer in the business realm, too.

What did I learn?

1. Don’t’ be surprised when it happens. It will.
2. Plan for it each and every year!

Next week we’ll talk more about planning the details, but be thinking about some of your own ideas to help boost business and cure your family’s summer blues. Believe it or not, these things can work together! You can boost business and keep the family happy at the same time!

Stop back next Friday to learn more.

‘She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for the task. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night…She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.’ – Proverbs 31:17-18,27-30

Faith and Business 101: Succeeding in Business Over the Summer!

We just got back from our 3 week trek across the U.S! To read more about our adventures, visit The Christian Moms Business Resource blog.

I’ll tell you…3 weeks is a very LONG time to be out of routine with a toddler (and also a husband who likes routine as well!) It was a working vacation for me, which added some extra stress, but we did manage to have some fun a long the way.

For many moms, running a business during the summer is stressful and difficult. I know that I personally have to completely re-arrange my schedule and thought-process for the summer. Because even though my son isn’t in school yet, my “mother’s helper” that comes over 2-3 times a week to help out is out of school and has vacation plans, and my little guy certainly does not want to be cooped up inside every day this summer.

So what’s the solution? How do I keep my business going over the summer and still keep my family happy?

I certainly don’t have all the answers, but I do have some ideas I’m going to try out in my own house:

  1. Head to the park once a week. We have a “sprinkler park” (as my son calls it) close by that is free for the community. A nice way to cool off on the cheap!
  2. Purchase a kid’s pool, or if you have older kids, a slip ‘n slide …or some way to set up water fun in the backyard for the kids. Set your laptop up in a shady spot or plan to make calls outside while everyone is having fun in the backyard.
  3. In our area, it is still pretty chilly in the morning until about 10am or so. Plan to get most of your work done in the early morning and then take the kids outside for a while each day as soon as it warms up.
  4. Keep your afternoon “rest-time” enforced during the summer months, too. Even for older kids. Quiet time (or movie/reading time) every day helps everyone calm down and you can get some extra work done, too.
  5. After quiet time is over, take some time out for the kids, make sure your dinner plans are in order and plan to check e-mails or finish up last minute tasks after the kids are in bed. Never forget the power of a “to-do” list! Making a list before bed each night helps you to transfer your brain-overload to the paper and you can pick it back up easily in the morning.
  6. Plan a “Non-Negotiable” date night with your husband each week. Even if you can’t afford to go out! Purchase a devotional book, make a favorite dessert and have a “coffee date” at home if you need to. This lets him know that he is important to you even during your busiest times.
  7. Make sure your husband knows how much you appreciate him and what he does to help out at home. Find out his “Love Language” and make sure you’re keeping his love tank full. He, in turn, will want to do the same for you. It’s amazing how much smoother things run at home without grumpy spouses trying to work around each other!
  8. Set up a play date at least twice a month with friends. This makes sure you get some adult interaction, too!
  9. Plan a few days of “stay-cation!” Make sure to take several full days off with your kids to just goof off and play. They will appreciate it and so will you!
  10. Find a new daily devotional that you and your kids can do together each morning. Allow the Lord to be the center of your life, family and all of your activities and with His help–you will all thrive this summer!

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. Psalm 1: 1-3 NIV

Faith and Business 101: Brainstorming for Business – part 3

Theme verse:

Call to me and I will answer you. I will tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own. Jeremiah 33:3

I think I have a good idea. What now?

Before you head back home to kids, playtime and happy and/or chaotic noise, you need to think through your action plan. Having a great idea won’t get you a thing if you don’t do something about it.

  1. Visualize your idea and write it down in paragraph form.
  2. Is there someone you trust that can listen to this idea and you believe could help make it even better? Write down their name.
  3. Is there anyone else you need to contact about this idea? Does it involve or effect anyone else? Write down their name or names.
  4. Write down a couple of resources you need to research this idea: websites, books you own or need to buy/borrow, co-workers, colleagues, etc.
  5. Give yourself a target date to have this completed.
  6. Go home and get started.

A great idea can truly take your business to the next level. I suggest planning at least 1 day every few months to brainstorm about your business. All you need is a few hours of time to think and pray.

As moms, its amazing how little time we get to actually think (beyond what’s for dinner, who goes where/when and what’s next on our list)! I have recently been astounded by that fact.

I’ve discovered that I have to actually schedule time to think!

To think “creatively,” that is.

I always come away from my own “brainstorming sessions” energized and excited to get to work on my idea. I hope you’ll take these guidelines to heart and find some great ideas for your own business.

Because we know that this extraordinary day is just ahead, we pray for you all the time—pray that our God will make you fit for what he’s called you to be, pray that he’ll fill your good ideas and acts of faith with his own energy so that it all amounts to something. If your life honors the name of Jesus, he will honor you. Grace is behind and through all of this, our God giving himself freely, the Master, Jesus Christ, giving himself freely. 2 Thessalonians 1:11 MSG

Faith and Business 101: Brainstorming for Business – part 2

Theme verse for the next few weeks:

Call to me and I will answer you. I will tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own. Jeremiah 33:3

What is brainstorming?

Dictionary.com defines brainstorming as: “a conference technique of solving specific problems, amassing information, stimulating creative thinking, developing new ideas, etc., by unrestrained and spontaneous participation in discussion.”

Wikipedia defines it as “a group creativity technique designed to generate a large number of ideas for the solution of a problem.”

Brainstorming in a group is definitely more energizing, but you can do this alone, too. I do this for business myself and I highly recommend it for your business as well!

How do I get started?

When I need some creative ideas for my business, quiet time to think and pray is essential. I usually ask my husband if he’s OK with me taking part of a Saturday and finding a quiet place to go off by myself.

I take my bible, my notebook, and a pen. That’s it. When I have my calendar or my laptop with me, brainstorming can easily turn into creating “to-do” lists. That is not what this is about!

  1. Read some of your favorite scriptures. The psalms are very inspiring and full of the wonders of God’s creation. I feel more creative after reading them.
  2. Ask God to give you ideas. In one of my favorite books “An Hour on Sunday, “ Nancy Beach says “Every one of us possesses the God-given potential to become more creative.”
  3. Be ready to listen.

When I’m brainstorming on my own, I get out my notebook and I write my topics or “problems” on the top of a blank page. Then, for the next few minutes, I’ll write down everything that comes to mind about this topic. Set a time limit if you need to (5-15 minutes is ideal). Write down anything that pops into your head. Draw pictures if that helps. “Any idea, no matter how wacky, might be just the ticket that leads someone else to the next great idea,” says Beach. Write down everything you’re thinking!

After you’ve reached your time limit, stop and look back through everything you’ve written. Circle the ideas that stand out. Force yourself to go to the next level. You could even write that circled idea onto a new blank sheet and start all over.

Now listen. Is God giving you an idea? Can you use it to improve your business?

Once you have an idea, then its finally time to write down some action steps.

We’ll talk about that next week.

In the meantime, remember that we all have the same access to the Creator of All!

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. Hebrews 4:16

Until next time,
